Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Win95 Locks during start-up
I know this has been covered before, but I can't get the search to work. I have a computer here that is Win95. During the Win95 startup splash screen, it locks up. Only turning off the computer frees it up. It will start in safe mode, but I can't find anything wrong..... yet......
Any suggestions?????

Any background about when the problem started?

Hey Susan. This is the computer I had a problem with starting in DOS mode only awhile back. I never got my hands on it until tonight, and God only knows what was done to it since I last heard about it. All I know is that it doesn't start in DOS mode anymore.
Acer Aspire
Model number - 5166SR
My conclusion so far is that the registry is corrupt. And guess what? No start up disk, and no Win95 disk. Any suggestions on that?

It sounds like it might need a reformat and reinstall to me since you can't even get into DOS mode. Even a reinstall over the existing setup would be helpful.
Aside from that, when you go into safe mode do you notice that anything is in DOS compatibility mode or if the video adapter has an exclamation? Is everything detected by the BIOS?
You may want to go into safe mode and uninstall all utilities, too. /forum/smile.gif

go into safe mode and change the video driver to standard vga.. and reboot.
Okay, it's fixed. We found the rescue CD that came with the computer, and I restored Win95 from that disk. All works like new. It was a corrupted registry problem.
Thanks for the replys Jin and Susan.

P.S. If anyone buys a computer from a manufacturer, hold on to that rescue disk they give you as if it were GOLD!!! And NEVER, NEVER, NEVER get rid of a program by just deleting it. Make use of the "Add/Remove programs" utility!!!
