My computer runs very slow all of a sudden. I have the win95.ch viruse and eliminated it from my computer and memory with Norton antivirus and a program I downloaded from symantec. I have pentium II 333Mhz with 192MB of Ram and a 6.4GB (5400rpm) HD but it still sems to run sluggish most of the time and occasionaly I, when I try to open a program, It says that there isn't enough memory to run it (and I only have 1 or 2 applications open at the time)
What could it be? Do I need a New HD? Please help with some advice..thanx!

Maybe your virtual memory (swap file) has been disabled, or you're letting Windows manage it?

http://support.microsoft.com/support/ServiceWare/IE/exp30/E9IPEBC6I.ASP

You could try setting your own fixed swap and see if that helps. For 196mgs of RAM, try setting around 100mgs min/max, see if there's any improvement.

You can adjust up/down for the best results.

Hope this helps.

Hmmmm... 192MB should be plenty for your needs, unless you're running several unusually memory-intensive applications at once. If socalgal's suggestion doesn't work, and you're sure that you're completely rid of the virus, how about trying FreeMem, which is a freeware/shareware program available from www.digitalriver.com (http://www.digitalriver.com) (let me check, I'm not sure of that address...)

It reclaims memory that has been occupied, but not currently used by, inefficient programs/Windows, and then releases it so you can use it for other applications. If you register it, it will keep a specified amount of memory free for use at all times.

Okay, here is an address which I think will work... but I'm not sure if it is specific to my particular copy of the program.

I use MEMTurbo, which is quite similar to Jeana says about FREEMEM. I've been using it in all my programming projects that severely tax the resources of the machines I use and does a very good job keeping memory defragged and optimized. Look at http://www.memturbo.com for this product.

I once ran into a client's computer that had the swap file set to READ-ONLY that was causing a lot of performance issues. Take a look at the attributes of your swap file, usually located in your c: root -> c:\win386.swp (if looking with windows explorer, select the file by right-clicking on it which brings up a context-sensitive menu, choose properties and this will show what attributes are set).

I agree with socalgal, that you shouldn't presume Windoze knoz best in managing your memory. Change those virtual memory settings. Heck with 192 Megs on board at 333Mhz, your machine should scream!

What video are you running? That could also be an issue if it's settings aren't optimized. A video accelerator is very helpful too!
