Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Autoplay causing XP to freeze?!

XP freezes when I change autoplay option for any drive (CD, DVD, HD, SC, etc) from “my computer” window (right click on drive, select properties, click autoplay tab, change an option, click OK, and close window). This is not a complete freeze, mouse still moves. To unfreeze, I must ctrl-alt-del to task manager, log off, and log back on (reboot unnecessary). No applications are listed as running on the application tab of task manager.

This must be a software problem because I don’t have the same problem with the XP 64 beta on the same machine (and I don’t have a similar problem with 2000 or Linux on the same machine but they don’t provide an analogous situation). I encounter the same problem logged in as myself or administrator. I’ve searched the problem quite a bit and tried a number of approaches including “CleanHandlers” from http://windowsxp.mvps.org/autoplayhandlers.htm but no luck.

It may or may not be significant that the freeze doesn’t appear to occur until the “my computer” window is closed. I’m not certain when the problem started but it wasn’t there a month ago. I’ve done quite a few things in the interim including upgrading Nero 6, installing Adobe Creative Suite 2, and adding stripped RAID (provided by the mobo (MSI K8N Neo2). All drivers and XP are up to date.

Anyone have advice?

Hi cinti

Ok first off, whats your specs, how many hdd u using and what systems, are they IDE or SATA. CDROM and DVD or just CDRW, on IDE 1 or 2 as master or slave? Any recent hardware changes

Also you say only once u changed to autoplay does this happen but when u log off its ok. If it is ok once you logged off then it is a running process, just not one displayed in task manager. In task manager see which is the process that is using 100% cpu, not application. Also check msconfig running processes.
If you cannot see then download a process explorer and see from there which one it is. This will give an idea on where to start. I had a problem where comp was fine, but as soon as you put view to thumbnail view, machine came to a halt, all because 1 particular image was corrupted and "looped" the display properties (u know the little thumbnail you see on the left hand side when u select an image)
Sounds like this has to do with your system setup and config. Need bit more info.
