The customs officials in Bali would'nt weigh her baggage to see if it was 4kg heavier than when put on the flight in Brisbane.
It was x-rayed when put on the flight from Brisbane to Sydney and not picked up, it was transfered from 1 aircraft to another in Sydney, where according to her defence lawyers it was to be taken out by a baggage handler.
The very same day 30kg of cocaine was taken from the bags from aflight from South America, by a baggage handler, which a group of them recieved $300.000,for that and other drugs they had brought in.
The bag had a zipper with no lock and the drugs popped out, not hidden when the bag was opened.
They would'nt check the clear plastic zip-lock bag the drugs were in for finger prints, all what we would expect if an Indonesian were arrested by customs here to try to find the truth.
A drug smuggler would atleast try to hide the drugs, not leave a lump in an unlocked bag, for them to fall out when it was opened, and not in clear plastic that showed the marijuana, without even opening the plastic bag.
I worked at Sydney airport for years and mentioned on these forums on more than 1 occasion about the baggage handlers and they threat they posed to us all by them being able to plant bombs in luggage without detection.
Everyone who worked there knew drug smuggling was rife. And only a token effort was made to detect it, and theft from luggage, the airline prefered to pay and avoid the bad publicity.

This whole case stinks. 20 years is WAY excessive for the crime too, if she's even really guilty.

Islamic law. Another reason why we are wasting our time trying to civilize these tribes.

"Almost 300,000 Australians traveled to Bali last year, according to government-run Tourism Research Australia."
I'll bet if the Austrailians boycotted the joint for a few months they'd turn her loose. Money talks.
What sucks about the whole case is she "could" actually be innocent. Even if she isn't it is only pot, not something like herion or coke. I smoked some weed when I was younger so maybe that is why I find this 20 sentence ridiculous.
I actually hope they can get her out but the prosecution wants to appeal and give her life without parole. I wouldn't go to that stink hole country if they paid me to go.

I have been to Bali and can only say it is a wonderful example of a culture that has weathered the sick abuse of it's culture that the west is trying to force down it's throat, especially the Australians. Good for them. Their children still respect their parents and still are willing to learn the arts and dance of one of the most beautiful cultures in the world. I am sure they could care less if the Aussies boycott their beautiful islands.

Yeah, this page has some nice shots of their beautiful islands. I wouldn't look if you don't have a strong stomach though.
The place might actually be nice, it must be if people keep going there but the thing is it just seems dangerous. I am also hearing more and more about people being set up for a drug bust in Bali.
Of course everyone wh ever got busted would say they were set up, but with a 20 year sentance for pot I would not take the chance.
Then again you could be blown up like the unfortunate souls on the following page.
http://www.fugly-bali.org/bombing.html
Don't look unless seeing bomb victims doesn't bother you.
You couldn't pay me to go there. I am dead serious about that.

LOL!!! We need a web page like that for Hawaii. These islands are being systematically destroyed by California style subdivisions and New York style money grubbing businessmen. As JM would say, ferk 'em all.

LOL, you could make a page like that for your site.:D Keep all the mainlanders away. I haven't been to Hawaii since the 70's. I was in Pearl a few times as a young squid.
I liked it but couldn't afford to do much, drank beer on the beach with my buddies mostly. Still had fun. Nice islands.

I'm sure they think the same about all the fat ugly Texan couples that show up in their tacky over stuffed shorts and matching blouses with a bag full of junk food and a glob of zinc oxide on their nose. Sorry tantone, but the one thing American tourists don't have is culture. The people of Bali have 10,000 years of cultural traditions that morons like you think is for the tourists. Morons like you would starve to death or die from anal retention if it wasn't for western style hotels and modern plumbing. What a dork.

I like cake!
Bali is a cash cow for the whole of Indonesia, the worlds most populous Muslim state, whilst Balinese culture is Hindu based, but the chance of Bali having any say how there Island is operated is minimal.
The terrorist organisation 'J.I' 'would love to see the end of tourism, and perhaps in the long run the Balinese may benefit from westerners not photographing there every move, but not without a great deal of financial hardship for them, and Indonesia in general.
But as a tourist destination, its lost its allure, what with terrorist bombings, pedophiles preying on the children of tourists while they are in the care of hotel child care facilities, and the media circus surrounding this drug trial, it's not the paradise that the tour brochures make it out to be.

If they don't want or welcome tourism, it is easily within their power to make it happen. Perhaps, just maybe, that tourism is a major source of revenue that is badly needed. Look at most of the Caribbean--poverty, unemployment, no real industry except for tourism. Without the "fat ugly Texan couples...with a bag full of junk food" they would have absolutely nothing.
"Morons" like me think that a different culture is what makes a country worth visiting. If I want to see lack of culture, I could go to downtown Dallas.

You invite insult. Your whole attitude of the Balinese is typical Igno-American rhetoric. Morons like you think every country in the world was made for American tourists to trample and exploit, then go back home and put them down for their differences and lack of plastic adornment that is all you really have over them in the first place. You sure don't don't have any love for them and if you ever made it out of the US you never learned anything of value from the experience.

You have a very narrow view of tourists and that prejudice clouds your view of reality. You can assume away as to what type of tourist I am, but telling someone else who they are only shows ignorance.
If some other country decides that they don't want or need the $$ from tourists, that's fine. But countries with a tourism industry accept, even invite, tourists and with these countries is where the responsibility lies to hang on to their culture. Foreign visitors will undoubtedly leave some mark, and it's up the tourist destination to do what they can to keep it from spreading.
