Any way to take out the gas in a car...cuz...well...the truck "somehow" got diesel gas in it...and now it wont work ....

It might cost $500 to fix it....

anyone know a better fix?

If yer lucky the tank will have a drain plug, otherwise, siphon as much as you can out and remove the tank to get the rest out, then change the fuel filters, and drain the lines,, refill with good gas, possibly put in some fuel injector cleaner, the good stuff not some cheap stuff, then cross yer fingers.:D

I'd imagine that the 'somehow' that it got in was through a pump at a filling station....

But that would be strange.....

Since, in the UK anyway, the nozzle for deisel pumps is too big for the petrol cars.

My dad has had unleaded cars all his life. We got a deisel and twice he has managed to put the wrong fuel in but realised whilst putting it in so no full tank and the car wasn't started so the wrong fuel didn't get through the system...but apparently putting some petrol in a deisel is a good thing. so we were alright one time. the other time he put too much in and got the AA out to tow it to a mechanic. Since we didn't start it just had to drain the fuel tank and was okay!

Good luck with that shade! :p

Well, you could always take the cap off and wait a few years for it to evaporate.

Seriously though, you don't have to spend any money if you can get most of it out of the tank. The biggest problem is the fuel injectors won't like the viscosity of the diesel. Just get as much as you can out of the tank and then fill it up with premium gas. Then you can disconnect the fuel line on the injector side and flush the lines by turning on the pump. Finally you may have to pull the spark plugs and clean them up. Spray a little starting fluid in each cylinder and quickly reinsert the plugs and reconnect the plug wire. It should crank up then. Once it gets started the bit of diesel that's left will burn off with the gas.

just take most out, then fill with Gas, it might smoke for a while but you'll be fine...

:D As a youngster my friends and I had "free gas". They parked the school buses behind the local elementary school. A hose was all you needed and we were good at it. Drop the hose in, a couple of quick puffs and gravity did the rest.

One problem came up. A couple of the new buses had diesels instead of the old straight 6's and we found out the hard way. We filled a car up with about 50% diesel 50% gas. We hadn't been gone from the scene of the crime 5 minutes when the odor and the smoke started and we realized what had happened.

We pulled the car down by the Ohio River and siphoned the gas out into the river. When we were getting ready to pull away one of the "brains" decided that he should toss a match into the mess. The river was on fire for about a 200x50 foot section. Dumb things we did as teenagers it is a wonder that there is any environment left.

Anyway, we went back to the buses and made sure we found a gasoline powered bus and filled her back up. She smoked until that tank of gas was totally burned out and the rest of the diesel was gone but the car was fine. This was before fuel injection was mainstream so I don't have any idea about that. It sounds like you have had some good advice though. I had forgotten about the story until I read this post. :D Made me remember. Thanks

When stealing gas you don't usually take time to huff it. We did after the fact start to take a quick whiff of what we were stealing.

Think about it. You drop the hose, you get the thing started. You watch the gas guage. You toss the hose in the trunk and you are gone.

If you are talking about fuel injector cleaner, you won't need any. Diesel will do a super job of cleaning the injectors. The trick will be to get it to burn with a spark plug. If it won't fire up, you will have to purge the injectors and fuel pump and dry out the spark plugs. Starter fluid is high octane so if you can't get it to fire, use some of that in each cylinder. Once you get it started it's going to smoke a lot but don't worry it will eventually clear up again.

Yes, that can get messy. My sister put some chainsaw gas in her hubbys new diesel Audi when she ran out. It was not pretty. Fortunately according to the dealer, there was oil in the premixed gas so it didn't score the cylinder walls. :p

My aunt in her Ford Explorer put diesel in her car a few months back. It wouldn't start and they ended up having to remove the entire gas tank from the car, emptying it and flushing it totally before being able to put unleaded back in it.

The biggest problem, at least where I live is that years ago they used to have diesel on a separate pump by itself but now it is often right next to super unleaded in the same panel.

I only goto BP gas stations because they are my choice of preference (for some odd reason, i dont like any other gas stations)

their regular unleaded is a green handle...and well..since 95% of the time, im at a BP, i just grab that handle. push start and u go...

this time I went to shell (some one in the middle of the ghetto, I was picking up one of my friends)...

The great shell gas station ALSO had a green handled gas nossle....but its deisel...and you push start on the main screen area..then pump...

Look at the bright side. You won't be doing that again soon. :)

BTW Diesel is a good substitute for solvent. A cup or two in a tank of gas will help clean the injectors and help remove the carbon in the head.
