I just ran a benchmark (SiSoft) on my system (AMD K62 300 on an FIC 503+
motherboard with VIA MVP3 chipset) and was disappointed. It says my cpu memory bandwidth sucks
and the front side bus is only 66 MHz. I have the jumpers set for 100 MHz front
side bus and have Toshiba PC100 RAM. AMD says the CPU I have is 100 MHz
bus capable. The PCI and AGP busses clocked at 22 and 44MHz (bad). So I set
the motherboard jumpers for all sorts of various settings and could never get
more than a 66MHz front side bus rating. So I set it for 66 MHz front side bus
with a cpu clock multiplier of 5 (yeah, I got pissed off and overclocked the cpu
but it works fine). Now my PCI and AGP busses bench at 34 and 68MHz, which
makes me happy, but my cpu memory bandwidth REALLY sucks now. (I also
clocked the RAM down to 66MHz to match the bus speed). Something is wrong
here but I'm not sure what. The proper setting is for 100MHz RAM, 100MHz
front side bus with a cpu multiplier of 3 - but I can't get a decent benchmark
out of that. Has anyone run into this kind of thing? How can I figure out where
the problem is? Defective motherboard, CPU, or RAM I would guess - but which
one? I trust the benchmark program as it works well on other systems.
