trying to play Theif 3 again...wahat a mess..help me please!

A while back I believe I wrote about an issue I had with this game ( Thief 3 ) ,and did play it about two thirds of the way through..then suddenly my sound dissappears....so i uninstalled it and forgot about it.

Just recently a friend let me borrow his copy and I loaded the game with what I describe as many times over installing and reinstalling...getting rid of evrything in registry and other and starting over..ect...

Basicly the game loaded fine..but when I loaded it to my main HD ( system) , initially the game could not find the play icon or some such and once again uninstalled it and put it in my other drive...loaded fine and here is the problem at long last.

Now Ii get the game doing this auto mode thing....menus will not stay put when I use the slider for settings( flickers and acts like a rabid dog ) and to top it off.. when the game starts.. the character goes around uncontrolable on his own.. with no controls by me working.

Wonder if there are any patches for it???

This is such a nice looking game and when it plays right is a great game.

What are my issues here..and any clue as to what is happening?

I just got done describing on another post about how I upgraded my drivers to the latest Nvidia 71.89's,but now i think possibly it could be those drivers..as I had similar issues with Splinter Cell upon loading newer version drivers also.

A friend who is somewhat of a computer expert said last night that the new SC Chaos Theory has some misc. drivers that were installed with the game which conflict and cause serious problems with some users machines..and that is why these things are happening. both games are put out by the same company and use similar effects for lighting... there are no issues with the grahics quality ( it is superb there)

Any thoughts please??

There is a patch available, the first thing I would try would be to download it and see if this solves your problems:

If that doesn't help, i'd try to revert back to your old set of drivers. If I remember, you upgraded them due to the message that Counterstrike gave you when you loaded, yes? If so, I think its more than OK to disregard this warning (I'm running my video card with 'old' drivers and it runs just fine - if it ain't broke don't fix it sort of thing).

Let me know if the patch file works out for you.

AFAIK that patch only fixes a save game issue, I don't think it includes anything that'll help you. Can't hurt though ;)

Newest drivers are not always the best - I now adopt MJC's "if it ain't broke" approach.

Just reverted back to the drivers i used when I played it before ( Nvidia 66.93 ) and worked ..but the same things are happening.

Never have I seen a game act so quirky.

Even when I loaded the game..it would not play after the third disk..and my computer rebooted when I put the play disk ( fisrt one in ) ,so I had to put the third disk in again and then it opened finally. It would be so nice if I could at least change the menu settings but it will not let me slide the bar down ( it acts like an overdose of speed ..mind of its own ) and in game the character takes off without me runnnng the controls. I can see from the flickering in the menu that the Vsync is on and that is wrong...but its impossible to change..while its on a bender.

I installed the patch just fine...

Why is this game doing this?? maybe my friend was right after all and the star90 drivers that SC CT installed messed with this game... who knows.
its a shame..because this is a real good game ( i was two thirds of the way thru the last time i played it ):eek:

It certainly sounds like a driver issue. I had some problems with Freelancer displaying strange menus and blue screens (not the usual Windows one, just a big block of blue), and fixed it by completely uninstalling my chipset/sound and video drivers with Driver Cleaner (http://www.drivercleaner.net/), then reinstalling them from scratch. I have no idea what the problem lay with, but it does work now. Perhaps something similar might work for you :t

Yeah.. after reading your reply I think you may be right. Thank you for adding some additional info for thought.

I would not be asking and trying so hard if I did not think this game is well worth it.. ( 4.5 star out f 5 )

Sometime in the near future I may do just what you perscribed and run the cleaner. Al I did was uninstall one set of drivers in the Control panel ( uninstall) and reinstall the other set.

I may also just uninstall SC Chaos Theory also ( temp.) and see if it removes those drivers..and proceed to reinstall T3.

Isn't troubleshooting loads of fun?;)
