Is this anything like what's going on?

When you are installed Windows 98 and your computer restarted for the first time, you may have received the following error message:

While initializing device NTKERN: Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer.

Now you receive one of the following error messages after Windows 98 Setup has completed:

- Invalid VxD Dynamic Link Call to Device 3 Service B

- While Initialing Device <filename> Windows Protection Error. You need
to restart your computer.

If you try to start your computer in Safe mode, you may receive the following error message:

Himem.sys Has Detected Unreliable XMS Memory at <address>.

Yes, I had the same error with windows 98. In my case, I had an agp video card, install the amd patch and it is working fine. I hope the AMD patch works for you also. According to AMD, they fixed this problem in AMD 400.

Bleeding Edge, Yes right after I load windows it comes up with that error. I have not been able to get it started in safe mode. This is not a new system it has worked before. I was loading a game ( Moto Racer) and in the middle of the load I got the blue screen with Fatal exception 0137:bff740df And that was the last time it work. Thank again

You upgraded from Win95 to Win98 and you already had motoracer installed then tried to run the game? Is that how this all happened?

Did you also have occasion to open up the case? And when your saying "load" I can take it that you mean 'start,' -right?

All right. I think you got me in a loop though. But I'll give it a shot.

The symptoms you described, the ones that I detailed, isn't likely to happen on a system that was working until now. The cause of these symptoms are specific. The cause and the temporary workaround are outlined below, however, I don't think this will be your answer. In part, yes, you may need to use it get to the fix. It depends why you can't get to Safe mode. The reason you can't are listed here:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q188/8/67.asp

Upon reading the cause below, you'll understand why I suggest you reseat the memory modules first, however, I suspect MotoRacer to be the main culprit. So what your going to have to do is at least get into Safe mode and then uninstall the game.

Now if it's the memory you won't have to do that.

Here's the cause of the error message first:

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if there is defective random access memory (RAM) in your computer.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, remove or replace memory chips in your computer to eliminate bad memory.

To work around this issue, use any of the following methods:

Method 1
If your computer has over 16 megabytes (MB) of memory, it may be possible to work around this issue by configuring your computer to only use 16 MB of memory. To do so, use the following steps:

1. Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to open the System.ini file in the Windows folder.

2. Add the following line to the [386enh] section of the System.ini file:

MaxPhysPage=01000

3. Save this file, and then quit Notepad.
4. Restart your computer, and then restart the Windows 98 Setup program.

NOTE: If you cannot start your computer in Safe mode, restart your computer, press and hold down CTRL key until the Windows 98 Startup menu appears, and then choose Command prompt only. Use a text editor (such as Edit.com) to edit the Windows\System.ini file.

Method 2
Restart the Windows 98 Setup program after you start your computer and choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only. To do so, restart your computer, press and hold the CTRL key until the Windows 98 Startup menu appears, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only.

Method 3
Use the System Configuration tool to limit the amount of random access memory (RAM) available to Windows. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Restart Windows in Safe mode. To do so, restart your computer, press and hold the CTRL key until the Windows 98 Startup menu appears, and then choose Safe Mode.

2. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information.

3. On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility.

4. On the General tab, click Advanced.

5. Click the Limit Memory To <n> MB check box (where <n> is a number) to select it, and then set the memory limit value to 16 MB.

6. Click OK, click OK, and then restart your computer.

In this scenario. Method 2 and the referenced System.ini line mentioned in Method 1 apply to you. The rest is listed for interest (just in case.)

What you are doing here is limiting Windows' access to only a portion of the physical RAM (crossing our fingers in hopes that the first few Megs are good)to see if you can get to Win98. The following is detailed info on MaxPhysPage

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q181/8/62.asp

Once you get into Win98 you can uninstall MotoR or you may even get away with a reinstall. However you do it, once Win98 is up and running, next time MotoR will install okay. Go ahead and get the update for it here under the Patches section: http://www.ea.com/

Just a note:
If you were in the Bios setup recenctly check the settings for the memory in case you may have change something mistakenly.

If none of this works (it should) please leave me to my embarrassment.

just trying -BE.

Bleeding Edge, Thank you for the reply none work. I should of told you that I Have did a format C: and reload every thing but can't get into windows I change memory with know good one ( my other system) removed all cards leveing just the video card, swap video cards/hard drive/cd-rom at this point I might just go get a Abit BH6 and a Celron. Then put this system back together and play with in when ever I have more time. I'm still trying to fine out what NTKREN is. Also loaded windows 95 ver c and try to upgrade it with windows 98 and all loaded full version of windows. But can't bring it up not even in safe mode. Thank again

I'm very sorry to hear this.

Ntkern.vxd
The Win32 Driver Model is implemented in Windows 98 by adding a new layer to the existing device driver architecture. Kernel Services handles device driver access for Windows NT, whereas Ntkern.vxd handles device driver access for Windows 98. Ntkern.vxd abstracts the Windows 98 architecture to look like the Windows NT architecture. This abstraction allows vendors to develop one driver for both operating systems.

I have an Acer Aspire with an AMDk6-2 400 in it and 160mb of RAM and the only time I have ever gotten this message is when trying to overclock to 450mhz. Well that is my 2 cents worth.

I've only seen this problem on my friends AMD.

The patch worked to get into windows, but nothing else worked worth a flip, so he bought a BH6 and a P3-500. No problems since!

I just put in a new motherboard and AMD K6 450 and am getting similar messages. I can get into Safe Mode after restarting and getting the Windows Protection-Restart message. So could this be just a RAM problem? When it boots up it says Memory Test Fail but gives me the option to press F1, continue.

Please advise. Might I just have one of my 4 chips in backwards?
