hello
i just put a new mobo (tyan s1590) and cpu (amd k6-2 400mhz) in my computer.
the hardware is working fine but my hard drive won't work properly(boot windows correctly). i have had many errors when booting windows. like .vxd files not loading right, windows protection errors, IOS error.
i have tried reloading windows a couple of times with no luck.
i don't want to format my drive because of all the data that i have.
how can i fix this?

Sounds like it's still loading all the drivers for the old mb, plus trying to load the new ones. Have seen this before & was able to fix w/o format by these steps -- BUT no guarantees!!

Will it boot windows at all, even safe mode?
Need to be in windows for this!

Backup registry, or do full backup!!

Open device manager (Start\Settings\Control Panel\System)

From device manager, select system devices.
Everything under system device is a mb resource.

Look at listings. If several items are listed twice or more, old stuff is still there & has to go, but there's no way to tell old from new. If only one of each appears, you may only need the k6 update from MS.

one by one, delete each item shown.

reboot.

Windows should "find new hardware" several times & load correct drivers. May prompt to restart each time. Do so when prompted.

Install whatever required software/drivers your new mb came with. Should be documented.

Since your new cpu is K6/2-400, you'll need the K6 W95 update from MS if running '95, not needed w. '98

BTW, reloading windows didn't fix because it retains existing registry settings.

Good luck.

I have just done a major upgrade too....different hardware BUT I found it easiest to just format and start from scratch.....reinstall everything - clean registry etc etc....probably not a bad option...I do it about every 2-3months anyway to clear away a of old installs/uninstalls

As EdS mentioned it probably relates to old drivers from the previous hardware......

Are you running Win95? If so you need a patch that corrects a timing problem when using a K6-350 or faster.
You can get it on the M.S. website.
Good Luck

I had that a similar problem. Spent ages swapping different items over. It ended up being the processor (I was stupidly using a cyrix M II 300. I Put a new processor in and no problems. If you can borrow a processor try it.

This sounds like the problem I'm having with the new motherboard and AMD K6/2(45) I just got. I installed everything and canonly get into Safe Mode. So I need to clear my old system devices and let it detect new hardware?

For some it prompts me for the drivers, but it only came with a CD-Rom. I would think they'd be on a floppy.

Also, I need to download the K6 patch from Microsoft? It is an autorun file?
