Hosting Websites

After spending countless hours searching google, i can't come up with any solid information, so here we go:
I want to host a website from my own server. I have a high speed connection so that is already taken care of. I own domain names. I have the webpages built. How do i register or set up a DNS to direct people who enter my doamin name to come to my server for the webpage? I can use apache or Microsoft's IIS of Frontpage web server. I'm running XP Pro, Frontpage 2002. Can someone please point me to a complete guide or help me out.

Do you have a static IP address with your web host? Or is it dynamic. You'll need a static ip address so that the dns will always point to you. Normally if you have a hosting package from your internet provider, they will give you a static ip and the dns server.

Yes i have a static IP. My ISP will provide the DNS that i have to link to?

Most likely they already have dns server. So you just have to point your domain name to their dns server. I think you point the domain name to the dns server from the company that you bought the domain names from (GoDaddy or whoever). Then let your isp know that you have www.mydomain.com and you would like it pointed to your ip address.

You'll have to deal with whomever bought your domain name. Use something like ZoneEdit (www.zoneedit.com) to set up your domain. They'll give you nameservers which you then give to whomever you registered your name with. You can't just register with your ISP or everyone else outside of your ISP won't be able to resolve your domain name correctly....plus I don't even know if ISPs provide that kind of service.
