Hi: I'm having a weird problem with my monitor: At one point it started flickering, then I lost the red color. I am sorry but thats the only way that I know how to describe the problem. The monitor is working fine except I see black where I should see red. Sometimes it would flicker and work normal for sometime then back to the same problem.
Any ideas? This is a 5 year old monitor so I also would like your sugestion/recommendations for a good 17" monitor
Tks.

Sounds like a bad CRT or possibly red driver circuit. You will be able to find a good 17" monitor at a computer show for less than the repair bill for yours. (avg is around $100-200 for a nice 17").

Dont take anyones word for quality... Look at text in teh monitor you plan to buy, and at at least 1280x1024. If it's clean looking there, it's good.

Disconnect and reconnect your monitor cable. Clean it if necessary. Also check to make sure your video card is seated well. I agree with BBA, but always double check and then recheck the simple, cheap stuff first. If you intend to buy a monitor, check www.virtual-world.com.

If you're the fixit type, check out this page:

I'll guess there's a weak gun in your CRT. The same thing happened in my old 15" monitor, which started out by sporadically losing blue, and then lost green (leaving me seeing red). I eventually left it out on the curb. As a replacement, I got a very nice 17" CTX PR-711 from multiwave that has been a balm to my eyes.

Thanks Jeana, great site. I'm getting a new monitor, but I'm printing the article and taking this one apart.

Yeah, that site is responsible for adding at least a year to my doctorate and filling my living area with rubbish that people want me to fix. Beware. /forum/wink.gif

Hopefully you've taken a look around the REST of the site (it's not just monitors!)
plop.phys.cwru.edu/repairfaq/ (http://plop.phys.cwru.edu/repairfaq/)

Needless to say, puhleeze read the safety guidelines before disassembling the monitor!
