Every time I boot my PC, I get an Illegal Operation box as soon as windows gets to the desktop screen. Details revealed this:

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 015f:bff7a3c2.

Frankly, I have no idea what this means. Norton Utilities couldn't do a **** thing about it. Is there something wrong with my Hard Drive?

Nope, nothing wrong with the HD.
Kernel32.dll seems to get corrupted every so often. Run SFC, and extract kernel32.dll from your install cd usually fixes the problems.

If that doesn't work, here is what happened to me:

My memory went bad somehow (static? probably when I was messing around in the case). Anyway, 80% of the time I booted up, I would get a slew of errors, and not even make it all the way into windows98 (it would have the color of the desktop, but couldnt finish putting everything on it).

That was one of the list of errors I had, apparently caused by bad memory. I replaced it, and reinstalled, and all was well.

Hopefully, you can fix it the easy way described above!! What a pain I went through, since I didn't know (or suspect) that bad memory was my problem in the first place....

Another note: Norton Utilities is a waste, and usually got me into or led me into more problems than it solved, not to mention the immense amount of resources the modules use up in the background. Speed disk is good, and I still have antivirus running, but never again will I put the utils back on. I learned the hard way (twice.. /forum/smile.gif hehehe).

Whew..thank GOD it isn't the HD. I've had similar problems, resulting in bad memory in the past, but I simply didn't think of that until you mentioned it. Thank you. I'll try using SFC. Ya know, since I posted my first message about this, I haven't gotten any errors upon re-booting. Better knock on wood...anybody got any salt? /forum/smile.gif

kramer - SFC is 'system file checker' - its a utility that comes with win98. it allows you to restore orginal files from the win98 cd if they get corrupted or messed up on your hard drive.

to get to it, go to RUN and type in 'msconfig32' and click OK. then on the window that opens up go to the 'tools' menu and click on the 'system file checker' in the drop-down list.

I've had the same error many times. On one computer it's 014f and another 015f. I have not cured it but it disapeared. So far i figured out that it's not the memory( in my case) and not the kernel, but some faulty DLL which places illegal calls. Since the kernell wants to execute this with the faulty parameters, the fault is directed to this. After installing new software the fault disappeared. It seems to be connected to OLE DLL's which did not work well together. I tought it was "stdole.tlb".

Good luck

Sorry I can't give input re problem, Dr.W, but Andre, for the memory, Mushkin (Siemens), Corsair, Crucial, Micron, and Kingston come to mind.

I have done business with Mushkin and they have great customer service in addition to good memory/lifetime warranty.

Then again there are many who are happy with no-name memory...

Hope your problems gone by the time this gets posted. Here's a pinch of salt, Doc. /forum/smile.gif
