I wonder if someone could help with this question....
I'm having trouble trying to defragment my hard drive, the trouble is that the defrag program keeps restarting because something is writing to the disk. I can't figure out what is causing the problem? I've shut down my screen saver, turned off auto-protect in Antivirus and I have no other programs running (none that I can see). how can I detect what is causing the problem?

You could have alot of programs writing to the drive. One of the easiest ways is to hit F8 and boot to safe mode. There are no drivers loaded here and you should be able to complete your defrag.

Win'98? Try hitting ctrl-alt-del and see what's loaded. All you need is explorer and systray.

Like Bob said-restart and when you here that thing beep hit the F8 key-then enter safe mode. If that doesn' work try laying on the ctrl key while it's booting.

Thanks for the info..
I had just installed a new program called SISOFT SANDRA a couple days ago, I thought that might be a problem ? Anyway, I used the defrag from this program and everything worked out fine ?? I'm still going to try your suggestion to tweak this problem.
Thanks.........

Make sure your antivirus, screensaver, Rain or Cpuidle, or any monitoring utility are disabled. They would continually reset your defrag since the hard disk image would keep changing if they are left on.

I am running 98 and I defrag on a weekly basis with cpuidle, norton av 5, and rc5 running with no problems. How are you on free space? I have seen NT machines have problems defragging with diskkeeper if low on free space. Also if you don't have a lot of ram and your swap file isn't fixed in size, it could be changing the size of the swap file and giving you problems. I reccommend setting the swap file min and max size to 1.5 times your ram, but never less than 100mb.
