Why can't I restart my computer while if I shut it down by holding the power button for about 4-5 seconds and then turn it on, everything is fine. What is the problem? What is the difference between these two procedures? God bless me that is not the hardware problem. /forum/frown.gif

After the computer begin to restart and when it finished the first screen(something like checking the memory, the hard drive etc.) it freezed. This problem showed up the day before yesterday, before that my computer works fine. And I do nothing to the BIOS etc. It just suddenly happened. I am using win98, not win98 SE. And I have Visual Studio 6.0 and Norton Anti-virus 5.0 installed in the system. Also one software to tweak the modem. Thanks a lot!

A simple restart does not flush data in system ram. A power down does. This can make a huge difference in NT4 when errors happen that require a reboot.

It's not the fix for you, but just an indication that your problem lies in software, not hardware.

Maybe there is a APM compatibility issue with your MB and the OS, or maybe just a simple disable setting in windows under APM or even in bios. Could be even "-eeegads" an OS corruption!
