Sony have been rebadging LiteOn DVD drives and altering the firmware to display different details for some time now.
The Sony DDU1613 is a rebadged LiteOn SOHD-167T, the Sony CRX320E a rebadged LiteOn SOHC-5232K etc etc.

Of course you pay almost double for the sony badged drive. Whats funny is that I personally know several people who bought Sony DVD writers because of the "better quality over brands such as liteon".
They got pretty annoyed at me when I said that they'd just wasted their money :)

Sony rebadge an awful lot of their products. Their VCRs are all made by Samsung for instance.
So rather than being the market leader, the image they keep trying to put out there, they are just a cheapo rebadging outfit that hasn't done any real innovation for years.

The might start rebadging Plextor drives and selling them at higher prices than even plextor do :)

As of yet, there aren't even any disks that can write at X4 DL, let alone X6 (at least not ones easily available).

Does Sony own LiteOn

If not, How come they get away with this ???

Nope. They just buy a lot of units, then rebadge them and install a slightly modofied firmware (or have LiteOn di it during manufacture) then sell them as Sony drives.

A lot of monitor manufacturers do it.
I have a Mitsubishi 15" LCD, yesterday a lady came to me with an acer one with power supply problems. Upon opening it up, it was exactly the same as my screen apart from the plastic facia, even the location of the buttons was the same, it even had the same stand, just a different colour. So basically they came out of the same factory but with different facias.

This just lets companies bring a product to market without actually having to go through the R&D and manufacturing stages, saving a lot of money.
The real manufacturers don't get the retail price for the item, but get the security of having a definite number of items sold.

So basically they're all frauds.

They are making fools of us all and getting away with it.

You sound surprised.
Cheapo brands at your supermarket are made by the big brand names, just labeled differently.
The difference between a $2 can or corn kernels and a $0.98 can is basicaly just the label, but idiots will still buy the more expensive one because 'it is better quality'. Stupid jerks.
Its these same people (or perhaps sheeple is a better name) that buy 3-ply loo paper that costs 50% more and lasts 50% less as a good quality 2-ply paper.

We are told that the brand name stuff is better so often that we all believe it. Just like polititians that lie all the time till the country thinks they are telling the truth.
