With Win98 and the FAT32, is it really that beneficial to partition?

Jim Ed_S 09-12-1999, 11:05 PM Not really needed in terms of disk space or sector size, but still is usefull. Multiple partitions allow you to categorize and separate data & programs, which is more vital with larger drives. You can put all games on 1 partition, office aps on another, etc. Data, internet stuff, can be kept apart. Major advantage is that if something goes wrong & causes the need to format, you can format one partition instead of everything. Personally, I keep only the OS and utils on C:, everthing else gets separated, and there's a backup of configured Windows directory in there somewhere... Stan 09-13-1999, 04:38 AM Hi It is always recommended to separate the OS from the apps/games... just in case smthg goes wrong. Stan Glytzhkof 09-13-1999, 08:52 AM I've got 10 dedicated partitions each serving a particular purpose. In general you should always have at least two partitions because this allows you to format one partition without touching the other. I'd also recommend using separate partitions for: * Backups * CD burning * Installation programs * Maybe for the swap file * Internet files (with high frequency virus scans). * Code and development components Apart from the technical rationales for creating more than one partition already mentioned by others, I'd like to add that there are also some very practical issues to take into account. Specifically scanning through your 13,9 GB hard drive on startup after a chrash can take several minutes. If you make C:\ smaller this will go a lot faster. SysOpt.com
