Just built a new machine. It uses a combo ASOUND sound/fax-modem PCI card that occupies several IRQs. The conflict is with the video card which is an STB Glyder Max 2+ AGP card. The video card is using IRQ 11 and the sound card also uses IRQ 11. I immediately noted the conflict because whenever Windows 95 starts up it tries to play the Windows wave file, stops abruptly, then after the display finishes loading, finishes playing the sound file.

I tried going into the system properties device manager in Windows 95 to change the resource settings of one of the devices, but neither will let me do it from there. So I went out to the BIOS settings and tried changing the PCI/PNP settings. It was set to auto, I changed it to manual, then changed IRQ 11 to ISA-Legacy. When I rebooted, both devices were assigned to IRQ 10, rather than 11. Also tried deleting one of the sound card's devices that was using an IRQ (external midi device) to see if the system would then automatically assign the sound card to that IRQ, but no dice. Both devices wound up back on IRQ 11.

What else can I try to get these two devices on seperate IRQs or maybe get the sound card to share a different IRQ (like for the external midi device which I don't have anyway and which promptly reloaded itself when I rebooted Windows.)

Appreciate any advice.

What sort of chipset do you have on the motherboard? You may need to upgrade your chipset drivers. I had conflicts with my SBLive and from getting new VIA drivers the problem was sorted!!!

I had a similar problem. I turned off IRQ sharing & all was ok. You could give this a try.

How do you turn off IRQ sharing in 95 & 98? Thanks!!!

This is for '98...don't currently have access to '95 & never tried it with '95 so not sure.

RT click my computer
Properties
Device Man.
View Device by type
System Devices
PCI bus
Properties
IRQ Sharing
Uncheck.

This may create problems if your system config. needs to share resources, but I have found it useful. I did not even find what was conflicting when I installed SB Live & this solved the problem. Everything else continued to work fine so I have left well alone.

Hope it helps..K

Are all of your Irq's used? Could you possibly disable one or both of your serial ports to free up it's interupt.

Check your video card to see if it has a jumper that will allow you to select a different IRQ assignment. Also, you could remove your sound card and all mention of it in windows divice manager, then move it to a different expansion slot and let windows detect it again. I had to do that with my modem because it was assigned to the same IRQ as my sound card. When windows detected it in the new slot, it assigned a different IRQ and everything works well now.
