Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : modem not connecting as fast
Hello all,
I just recently moved to a new place that will actually have a T1 in a few weeks. So, in the meantime I decided to use my trusty 56k again. However, it seems that my connect speed which used to be around 45333k is now defaulting to 26400k. I did install my ethernet card just to made sure it worked but I had to take it out for now. Prior to installing the ethernet card though my connect speeds were much faster. Have I done something wrong? What am I supposed to have in the network settings of the control panel? Thanks.
Maybe you got bad phone lines. I got a 56K X2 modem on a 56K MSN server and it connects at 28.8 at the most. I tweaked the hell out of it too. But, I can still get a 300-500 ping in Q3 on Q3test2 with about 10 players.

you probably had a straight copper connection to your local central office at your old place, and the new location probably has you on some kind of pair gain connection..56k modem will not work at high speeds under those conditions.

I'm on a land line 56k connection also. I'm also near the end of the line from the switch(bout 5miles). There are a lot of impedence coils, amps, etc. between me and the main office and my connection speeds/downloads are pretty slow. Your distance from the main office probably is the biggest factor influencing speeds. The local phone co. here (OKC) only guartantees 14K so I feel lucky to get a 30,000K connection. Your ISP would probably be the next contributing factor in speeds.

The 3com line test is a joke! Don't bother.
Here's a real line test http://help.ibm.net/helplib/tlcoinfo.html .

the biggest factor with phone transmission speed is "How far do you live from the phone company switch?"
I know this since I used to live a 4-6 miles from mine and was lucky to connect at a speed higher than 30K. After I moved I was around 1-2 miles from the company and now I connect at 53K everytime I dial-up.

Here's the link to USR-3Com to do a line test to see if its in the line. This will work for any modem.
