Hey, i keep hearing from people that its not reliable to burn dvdr at anything above 8x. Is this true? Does anyone know of anything or have proof of anything that proves or disproves this? Let me know, thanks :)

I have burned a lot of DVD's at 16X with no problem.
I remember when CDRW drives were increasing burning speed from 4X to 8X and later all the way up to 52X. Some people were claiming that you couldn't get a good quality music CD at speeds in excess of 4X. They were wrong. Some people just like to hold on to old ideas.

But you do get what you pay for.
Cheap burners and cheap media may result in poor quality copies.

I have the new Memorex DVD16+ DLR4. Writes 8X DVD media at 12x to 16x all of the time, no problems and no coasters as of yet. Great getting a 4+ gig burn under 7 minutes!

under 7min? lol. I was hoping it would take 3-4min instead.
8x -r takes 9min 30sec
8x +r takes 7min 30sec
No reason for me to upgrade anytime soon, its only saving me a few min at best :D
waste of money

Jamie, no you don't get that big of an increase from a 8x to a 16x. I went from the Pioneer A06 at 4x, with the firmware crack to this 16x, and that is a big difference. Screen shot of Nero Recode of a 7.4 gig video (with permission to copy) transcoded to DVD5, burned on 8x -R media.

I just got my new NEC 16X DL burner last week.
Burned my first full DVD last night. Using Verbatim 8X -R format, It burned in a hair under 5 minutes...it burned the DVD at 12X speeds, even though it was rated at 8X.
I have the same media, 8X but a +R, and it'll only write at 8X speed.
I agree with Sterling, when it comes to burners and media...you get what you pay for.

According to the reports I have seen, this burner is just a rebadged NEC 3520. Got it at Staples for 79$ with a 20$ rebate. The 3520 is $99 to $129 around here right now. I won't complain.

Should've looked a bit towards newegg.com.
If you live in the states...which, I'm assuming you do since you mentioned Staples...
I got the ND-3520A for 50 bucks, including Fed Ex shipping.

Here's the one I got:

The software bundle is decent, Nero Express 6.X, Recode 2.0 and a load of other utilities I haven't used yet.

So you paid 35 bucks extra for a box and Nero...
I guess since I have used Nero for years...I don't consider that...
Not a bad deal.
I had a Lite On 12X +/- that now belongs to my girl...so, no complaints here...:)

Actually the package is very nice addition, it held a lot of trash I needed to clean out of my desk.
The software is worth the price. You get the oem version of Nero Ultra 6.6., lacking in only the wave editor, MediaHome and the drive image. My only complaint is the interface is a bit different from the other versions of Nero I have, takes a little bit to get used to it.
As to the burner, I have noticed the the write lead in and lead out take a bit longer than my pioneer did. Understand there is a firmware upgrade but I'll hold off a bit as it is working just fine for now.

If you find a firmware upgrade...pass it on.
I looked a week ago...and none were available...that I could find, anyways...

NO issues at all yet.
Nice, quiet, quick...liking it so far.
Used it about a dozen times, no coasters.
I like the fact I can buy 8X Verbatim DVD-R, a spool of 50 for 19.99, and burn them at 12X.
Very nice...and thanks to mobo for the firmware upgrade. Worked without a hitch...
