Since formattimg my computer, my connection has gone from 48000bps to 31000bps. My tech
support gut said to get US Robotics PCI internal modem. Does anyone have a comment on
this? He's always been right helping me my computer, just wanted some more info. Thanks

Save a slot.

USB external.

The USB is good idea if the hardware and OS will support it.

Regular external's are OK as well.
If you want internal, however, I'd stay away from USR because of past history of poor support and high price.
If you're ever going to use any OS besides Win9x, get a jumpered modem - NOT a PnP "winmodem" Most ISA modems are jumpered "hardmodems" while most PCI modems are jumperless "softmodems".

As far as the brand goes, I've seen best luck with el-cheapo "free-after-rebate" modems. Recently installed one for a friend & his free piece-of-junk is faster then my Diamond 56iSP! And it's not the only one I've seen to do this! Kind of discouraging...

What kind of modem do you have?

Check the properties for the serial port it is using - I bet the speed is set to the default 9600.
