I need to reformat and reinstall Win95 on a machine. There are registry errors and problems opening many types of files in Windows and just reinstalling Windows w/o reformatting didn't help.

Someone was kind enough to give me a copy of the Win98 boot disk; however, the CD Rom driver on that doesn't seem to work on my machine (an Acer laptop...AcerNote Light 370pdx). The boot disk starts up and loads a few things but ends with a "Bad command or file name" error when it's attempting to load the "ASPI CD-ROM Driver for DOS/Version 4.01S/Copyright 1990-1996 Adaptec, Inc." and I don't get access to the CD ROM.

This is my cousin's computer and she's not kept track of all the disks and CD's that came with the machine - they're at her home overseas. Consequently, we've downloaded the drivers that are on Acer's website, but if there's anything else that we'd need to reformat and reinstall Windows, we probably won't have it...Including a CD-ROM driver, I think.

Do I need to -get- a copy of a CD-ROM driver that works with my unit, or is it something that I rather -set up- somehow on the boot disk? What should my next step be?

Thanks a lot...W Chang

Not a good idea to use 98 boot for win95. If you can get a dos 6.22 to reformat the hd, that always works. I usually find any generic cd driver works (mine just died). Check out Yahoo auctions for a cheap copy of dos. I have a full working copy of 95 that I am not using anymore. Let me know if you want it.

You can use a 98 boot disk with 95, as long as it is OSR2 or newer, it's been done many times, all of the files are the same or compatible, only now you have the cdrom drivers. If you really need to, go to the manufacturer's web site, they should have them on their support page.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help..I was able to set up a boot disk with the info that people have given me, and I also found a driver for my CD rom eventually. Got the reformatting and reinstall fine, drivers and all, just have to get the modem to work.

Thanks again,
