Ok, I know this is going to sound weird, but I am looking for some way to limit my internet (internet only, not network) bandwidth on a particular machine to 512kb.

I currently have cable internet, and am looking at DSL, however the DSL speed is much slower. The advantage though is that it is cheaper, and has a static IP address, which would be nice to have.

So, I would like to see if I am even going to notice a speed difference if I go to the lower speeds.

Anyone have any ideas how to do this?

You can use one of the means in this page: Can I Monitor my LAN, control the usage of the Internet, and Network Resources by other computers from my main computer? (http://www.ezlan.net/monitor.html)

512KB/sec, DSL will be OK for surfing File Download would be about 50Kb/sec.

Well, since you are the expert on this, let me ask you. Do you think I will notice a difference going from cable to DSL?

I know that DSL has a big advantage of the bandwidth actually being there, unlike cable which can slow down if a lot of people in the area all get on-line.

Nice link....Cat.

I get people asking me all the time...which is better.

Most of the time, DSL is cheaper...and if all you're gonna do is email and surf the net, I tell 'em to get DSL. It's plenty fine.

However....if you plan on downloading a ton, like videos, music, etc., cable is the way to go.

SBC DSL over here is rated at 1500 down for about 20 to 29 bucks a month.

Comcast and Wide Open West Cable offer 4MB down, and is usually about 45 a month.

My Comcast consistently tests out around 3800 to 4100 down, and even at "Peak" times, 3600....

I can live with that....:)
