I have an AMD K. 2/350, 128 mg RAM, WIN98 o/s, HP printer. I just installed a 56k modem and I keep getting an error message as follows:

Scanner is not found. Please check the following.
(1) LPT 1 port (SSP/EPP) is enabled
(2) Power adapter is plugged in the scanner connector
(3) Parallel port cable is plugged in to the LPT port

I checked all of that, uninstalled and then reinstalled the software, with the same resulting error message. The printer is hooked up to the scanner on the parallel port connection and it works fine, so I know the LPT port and parallel port cable are are ok (items 1 + 3 on the error message above). There is a light on the scanner that comes on when there is power to it, so I know item 2 on the error message is ok. My WIN98 does not register any device conflicts so I am not sure if the new modem is a part of the problem. I had a 33.6k modem before the 56k, and had no problems with it. How can I fix this? Thank you.

try setting your lpt1 to IRQ 5. Had a similiar problem awhile back, software that came with scanner would only work with lpt1 set on interupt 5.

good luck

Went into bios setup and changed LPT1 from 7 to 5. Tried to start the scanner. No luck.

I'm sure you have tried reinstalling your scanner drivers? Perhaps the other install corrupted your driver in some way.
And, have you by any chance deleted the contents of Windows\Temp?

Should I delete the contents of Windows\temp?

No, sorry, I should have been more specific.
My Visioneer scanner actually puts part of it's driver in that folder. Seems strange, but it does.
Also, try the system file checker in the system information tools menu to see if some of your files have been corrupted. Risky business, but if it finds any corrupted you might wish to restore them from your most recent Windows disc.

I don't know if this applies to you, but I've seem major problems occur with HP scanners and 56K/V90 LT winmodems. This may also be the case with your visioneer unit. There is some conflict that develops between the two. Neither HP nor most companies that utilize the Lucent Technology chips seem to be able to answer what the conflict is. If this is your problem, I suspect visioneer will also not be able to tell you what the problem is.

If this is your problem, you can purchase a modem with the Rockwell chipset (many Creative Modem Blasters have this chipset).

Your second option would be to purchase a "hard modem" such as the US Robotics/3Com units, which are some of the top rated units for through-put and connect speeds. These are usually ISA slot modems, but I believe I saw a post where some manufacturers have come out with "hard" PCI modems.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I went into the windows system file checker looking for corrupted files. Did not see anything unusual. I may have to replace the modem if I can't get another solution. Thanks again.

O.K. The failure of the scanner to initiate is sporadic. I uninstalled and reinstalled the modem driver, and the scanner works, BUT...only temporarily!!!!!! After a couple of restarts or the initiation of another program, the scanner might not work again. To fix this, I uninstall the modem driver, restart windows, windows detects a "new" device (the modem), let windows automatically select a driver (the same one as before), and reinstall it. The scanner now works...for a few times, and then the error message appears, the scanner won't initiate, and I have to go through the same uninstall and reinstall the modem driver proccess again. Does anyone have a clue as to what is happening? Thank you.

You still have not replied as to whether it is a LTwinmodem, but I still suspect that it is.

I restate what I said before....there is a direct conflict with your modem and the scanner software. More specifics....upon installing the scanner software, my LTwinmodem would work perfectly. Then upon re-boot, the modem would not function. My message was "port open", but, none-the-less the modem would not work. After removing the modem from the device manager and re-installing everything again....the modem would work again. With the next re-boot. the modem would not work again. If the computer was left on, the modem would work fine, but upon any subsequent re-boot.....BAM.....the modem was gone.

My advise is still the same, through out the modem and get one with the rockwell chipset.

Thank you. That may be the only way to go.

I had a similar problem when I installed a modem and scanner at the same time, scanner operations were sporadic at best. The only way I got the scanner to work was to uninstall my HP printer, install the scanner software and then reinstall my printer. I read later in a local computer newsletter that some scanners (mainly Microtek) and HP printers don't play very well together and that was what the newsletter recommended doing. You might try it, before tossing the modem.

What you might have is a problem with the TWAIN drivers. Try and uninstall the scanner then go and shutdown everything except the systray and explorer. then reinstall the scanner this might help you out. at least it is something else to try

Here's something that maybe overlooked.

Is the addresses in the bios set to auto for your com port and LPT1 port. Try setting them manually, this maybe your problem I had a similar one with a vid-cam that windows only saw once in a blue moon. Another thing to consider, try getting one of the parallel port add-in cards.
