I'm sure some of you have seen "coolers" as in the old fashioned picnic coolers using a thermoelectric element to cool the inside of it for drinks and meals and such. I've decided to make my own beverage cooler and am wondering what sort of wattage peltier I should expect to use to keep the thing at a reasonable temp (probably under 40F).
I intend to use a volcano 7+ as means of cooling the hot side as that is the best heatsink I have laying around.
Cooler is better but I dont want something my hsf cant handle.
The ones I was looking at before seem to be using ~80 watt peltiers with crappy aluminum heatsinks and a basic 80mm fan (not sure how powerful, never actually saw the thing in action)
I might also put my WC radiator in the cooler for some fun should I get bored.
edit: the unit will most likely be in my car during summer months with temps probably getting pretty **** hot, am I at high risk of the unit burning out? (probably)
I guess I could always bring it inside when I'm not using it.. or just turn it off.
Even though I'm going to be using a basic cooler I'll probably add some sort of extra lining to the inside to try to help with retaining my cold air.

I used a 12v cooler with a peltier unit in it in a boat I owned. What a waste of money. That thing will suck a battery dry in 10 to 12 hours. Now considering I was using 100 amp deep cycle batteries at 12v do the math. I think the unit said it would draw 30watts. Fat chance. Maybe with a block of ice in it.

I use one of these:
http://www.pccasegear.com.au/images/redwarmer1.jpg
But the silver version :)
It draws a lot 72W but cools to 20-25 below ambient temps and heats to 65C. Its got an 80mm fan in the back of it and can run from a car lighter socket. Holds 6 cans, or 4 bottles.
Only when the car is running I'd say, dead battery in no time at all otherwise. You should be able to get one for $25.

I have one of those car jumper things w/ a cigarette lighter plug thing in it so killing my battery isnt much of an issue, and reguardless of how cool it can get it is still better than drinking 100F water from the back of my car
anyway I've seen a ton of them but I'd rather make my own, think an 80watt pelt should be enough?

Back before the Montreal protocol came into effect I used a shot of R-22 to cool off beer a 6 pack at a time. A good 20 second shot would chill it perfectly. When it started to get warm another shot would cool them back down.:D
Ahh the days before we knew what it was doing to the world we live in.

What do you mean those days? We know what we are doing now will screw up the planet but we STILL keep doing them.

I'm just in a foul mood because my govt has just cut the guts out of our health system to cover our commitment in ferking iraq, after saying, actually promising, that they wouldn't touch the health system, and despite having a budget surplus that would easily have covered things.
Thats what you get under ANY conservative government, just look at the health system in the US, thats what my country has to look forward to!
So tell me, should I be happy or what!

Ha!.
Good old sylvania waters. I don't think that it was ever mentioned income bracket those cockroaches were in, but it was an awful lot more than the average aussie.
Property prices there START at around $2 million!

if only someone could talk about my beverage chiller -.^ a few pretty simple questions.. and I dont see why this is in O/T cause I think pelts are at least somewhat technical :\
- is an 80 watt pelt good enough / too good? Dont want to freeze my water, just make it drinkable.
- is a volcano 7+ good enough to cool the hot side of an 80 watt pelt? I'm thinking it is since the prebuilt chillers I saw seemed to be using pretty cheap aluminum heatsinks w/ basic 80mm fans.
- will the d**n thing burn out if I run it in ~100F ambient air?
I guess some testing would work but i'd kind of rather not spend like $20-$25 on a pelt and have it not work.. though I guess my fx5200 could be pelt cooled or something.

I'm surprised you didn't put wienerhouse. As in the vulgar slang meaning of the word.:t

Afroman from afrotechmods.com (http://www.afrotechmods.com/fuxx0red/snooler/snooler.htm) has already beat you to it. The thing that I recomend is to insulate the bolt with either it's own plastic casing or wax. Either way it will work pretty good.:t

I dont plan on making a single beverage cooler, I'm taking a compact basic igloo cooler (one of the ones that hold 6 or so drinks) and lowering the ambient air of it to help chill multiple beverages.

Perhaps a mirrored interior.
