I am just starting building my first computer and was wondering if I turn it on after installing Ram, CPU, motherboard with video and sound onboard, and all ports, will I get anything on screen. Have not installed floppy, cdrom, or hard drive at this point. I was wanting to see if I had it right this far. Thanks.

You ought to see a BIOS screen and then it'll explode. Well, OK, it won't explode but it won't boot so it'll just stop there /forum/biggrin.gif That's perfectly all right to do.

Ok, I tried it and got nothing. No beeps, no screen. All fans are working and so is power- on LED.

Yes, if everthing is set right it should post (Power On Self Test) and allow access to BIOS setup.
Double check any & all jumpers or switches, even if you didn't move them, against the MB manual before plugging in power!

Double check your CPU and memory are in tight. What type processor and MB?

It's a Alton M598 w/AMD 450. I have checked and rechecked and can't find a thing. I bought this mb from auction as new, but the anti static bag had been opened and you could see where screws had been installed. So how do I find out if it's bad MB, Ram, or CPU. It seems that the PS is ok since all fan's are working. I ran it for about 4 min. and the CPU seemed a tad worm. Thanks.

IF there is a way to clear CMOS on that board, do so. Then try again.

Astro,

How long have you had this motherboard? I would personally suggest trying to get it exchanged for something else as the M598 board IS NOT a compliant 100mhz buss board. at 100mhz you will not get a stable system unless you bump up the voltage. If you need to keep that board run it at the 95mhz speed @ the stock voltage. (I have one of these boards (couldnt return it when I found out about the problems with 100 FSB) so I am now having to run a K6-2 350 chip at 333! (3.5x95) (actually I now run at a higher speed but had to bump up the voltage to get it to run stable) and the computer store that I got it at NOW no longer will carry the PCChips/Amptron/Alton ect boards.

Sorry to be the bearer of not so good news!

Mntsnow

ps. I have used other PCChips/amptron boards(M748/PM8600/PM9100 ect.) with good results but they had BIG PROBLEMS with the M598 boards.

I have encountered exactly ONE PCChips mobo and hope to NEVER see one again, regardless of what name they slap on it. /forum/frown.gif
BAD!!!
Mntsnow, have you tried 4x95 on that board?
Make it a 380 and turn things around. /forum/smile.gif

Under,

I actually now have it at 4.5x95! (428) running at 2.5volts. I also have another K6-2 350 on a Epox board running 4x112(448) @2.4volts and a K6-2 450 running 5x100@2.4v(nothing else higher works without getting up to high in voltage) on another Epox board (both are MVP3G-M's)

So as you can see I run AMD's but I admit I have 2 celeron rigs also (just had to try them /forum/biggrin.gif ) Both are 333's (One is running stock on a Amptron PM-585b mobo and the other is running at 516@2.4v on a Abit BX6-2 board.

Mntsnow, you definitely have a mixture of quality in your motherboard selections. /forum/smile.gif
I think you found both ends of the pendulum.
Sorry if my post was insulting at all. Wasn't meant to be.

Over,

Not a problem none taken /forum/biggrin.gif Yes I have been to both extremes when it comes to computers....Friends and family usually want "down and dirty" (sold them most of my "lower quality" systems) and since I got into "clock'n" I go with "higher quality" boards and perfs.
