I have just upgraded my cpu to a K6 III 400 mhz. When I try to boot it, a windows protection error comes on the screen even if I try to boot into safe mode.

The equipment here is a Giga-byte GA5-AX, with the latest BIOS 6/17/99. 64 mg PC100 ram, Ati Xpert98 video card, Maxtech 56K modem, Ensoniq AudioPCI sound card. The computer was working perfectly prior to the upgrade with a Cyrix MII 233 MX cpu.

The only other veriable is a new case fan.
During posting the cpu is recognized correctly. I have the jumpers setting to 2.4v, 100 mhz cpu bus clock multiplier x 4, 66 mhz AGP bus, 33 mhz PCI bus.

Is there anything I have overlooked in the setup? Please help.

Are you using Windows98 or 95?

Devjoy, see thread below from Pete1. Same problem your having. Seems there is a patch out there for Windows95, if your running an AMD 350 or greater, to correct this problem.

good luck

Thanks Awwall, I have just downloaded the patch. Do you think I can get into window if I disable cpu cache? I can't even get into safe mode. Can the patch be installed from DOS?

How Sweet it is!!!!!! I just tried it and it worked. Thanks a bunch. I'm up and running!
