On bootup, one of my computers fails to make to the final windows 95 screen. I will get a message saying "while initializing device IOS: windows protection error. You need to restart your computer." Does anyboby know what IOS is. Internal operating system? Tried two different video cards. Not that. Its a barebones system. Win95/cdrom/atx board/64megs dimm and a small older harddrive. Most of the time I can get into windows thru the safe mode. Some of the time I end up with the same message. Any ideas as to what the problem may be or what I could try?
I'm running a amd 400 with memory running at 66. It is pc100 but I didn't want set that at 100 untill I knew system was operating correctly.

Go into safe mode and into System Properties and see if there are any yellow exclamations.

Check out this link and see if it pertains to your problem. Indicates may be a mouse problem. I think the IOS is input/output system.

Did you install a program or make changes to the system configuration just before this happened?
You should still be able get into SafeMode. Edit your configsys and autoexec files and prevent any lines related to Smartdrive from initializing by placing REM in front of the line. Use Start/Run/Sysedit.exe
This happens with certain hardware configurations on older systems. MS has a fix for this. It's not with their normal updates because of the rarity of occurrences. And they don't recommend people using this patch if they are not having this problem.
~edit
and rename the smartdrive.exe program
Another note:
If you have Internet Explorer 4, this should not happen.

On some systems, if you install MS Office 97 you will get this error, microsoft does have a few fixes for it including SP1 and SP2 for Office 97. Otherwise, you may have installed some new busmastering drivers? try safe mode and uninstalling them.

First of all I would like to thank everyone for the idea's and suggestions. You guys/gals are fantastic!
I'm much closer to resolving my glitch.
Susan..I didn't have any yellow exclamations.
Awwall..I check out the microsoft site, but my system didn't reflect what my problem could be.
Bleeding Edge/jeffbird and underclock.... I didn't make any program change, but this is a new processor, the AMD K2 400. That got me to thinking. Even though I tried too different video cards, they both are ISA 1 megs built in 1991. Is it possible amd400 doesn't like them? Here's why I think that, I went into bios and disabled my CPU internal cache. After I did that, the computer boots fine into win95. Do you think my cpu cache is flaky or the it is the old video cards? I don't have a PCI card laying around to try, I'll probably try my AGP card that I have installed in this system. Could it be these two older cards and the cpu cache aren't compatable. Win95 somehow plays a part also, because that when bootup will not happen with cpu cache enabled.
My cpu is running at 105 degrees F. Is that too hot? Need better heatsink and fan?

Boot to safe mode, device manager, and delete any duplicate entries you find there. Delete both of them. Then delete any devices that are no longer in your system. Then reboot.

Pete, you might now already, but Windows 95 has a problem with AMD 350+ Cpu's, and you have to download a patch for it. This might be your problem, if you havent tried/known about it already, clock it down to 300, see if it works, if it does, jump on net, do a lycos search for AMD 350 Patch or something Hope This Helps

Dash, that's what I was after /forum/wink.gif Pete1, you have to have that patch with Win95 but not for Win98.
And 105 degrees F isn't too bad.

You fit all the symptoms of the AMD >350Mhz bug to a tee. That is your answer.

Hello all, I had the same problem with AMD 350 and win95a. You didnt say if your running 95A or B. If its A, niether amd or ms have patches for it. I emailed amd back & forth and they told me they would upgrade me to 98 at there expense! I already had 98, I was trying to some practice on 95 to try to get a job with the helpdesk contractors for Marriot- Marriot runs 95 only.
Mine would add extra floppys when it said windows protection error- if I booted to safe mode and removed the extra ones it would stay for awhile then do it again.
Hope that helped some.
