Word 2003 attachments start in markup view

Good morning all. We are using Office 2003 and W2K SP4. The problem we are having is that whenever you recieve a Word document from someone else, it always opens initially in the markup view. Is there some setting to make the default view, when opening documents, not show the markups? I have searched the MS Office site, Google, SysOpt forums, and many others and haven't found a solution to this one yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In a new document, click view then uncheck markup.

Try opening an existing document then.
