I am running Windows XP sp 2 on a newer gateway laptop and am attempting to connect a Palm Zire 21 via USB. I updated to Palm desktop 414. Firewall is turned off. The palm will not connect to the USB port - it gives a not able to connect message. The USB drivers display as enhanced - which i take as usb 2.0 drivers. When I attempt to synch - it does not even connect to the usb port. Any suggestions at all? Any instructions on possibly uninstalling the USB drivers? Procedures? any help would be appreciated! -- welk

I have seen this issue on laptops before, where the USB ports weren't powered the same as they would be on a desktop.
I am not sure if that is the same issue you are having though.

We have issues with USB palms here at the office. Several times the settings for the Hotsync Manager just don't turn on for USB. I would check that first - simply right click on the Hotsynch Icon and make sure USB is checked. If not check it and try again.
If that is not your case, verfiy that windows sees that the palm is plugged in. Sometimes the cable or cradle does not work properly. Right Click "My Computer" and select manage. Go to device manager. Expand USB devices and plug in your palm. See if a unknown device appears under USB device or Other Devices. I am not certain which category palm shows up under when it is recognized but you should be able to find a Palm OS Device under on of the device manager categories.
If you plugged in the palm prior to installing the Palm Software, Windows 2000 and XP have issues installing the driver properly. If your palm is seen try to update the drivers. If not uninstall palm desktop and reboot. Reinstall Palm Desktop and then plug your device in and see if it installs properly.
Let us know what happens.

Try all of the different USB connects available on the laptop. One of our Dell models at work requires the devices to be plugged into specific ports before they work.
