I have a pentium II, running at 300mhz and at each time that I try to run defrag or scandisk I get an error message at 20% saying that defrag has run 10 times do you want to continue.
what do I do.

Well, speaking from expereince, you have one or more of the following running in the background:
1) Antivirus program
2) Some 'helpful' program like Norton Utilities/CleanSweep/whatever running underneath
3) Screen Savers and power management features are enabled.

Disable em... they cause the computer to still do activity at certain intervals, which interrupts the scandisk/defrag process.
/forum/smile.gif If it restarts too many times because of interruptions, it will finally quit, because it can't really get anywhere to finish the job.
Have a good one!

Oh yeah.. turn em back on when you're done!
May seem like a no brainer, but I know I used to take every comment in here quite literally! If they didn't say to reverse something later, I didn't!
Just wanted to clear it up! hahahhaha

If you have programs running in the"background",it should'nt bother defrag(my system doesn't).However if you run diskscan in full mode(full HD check),whatever background programs are running will interfere with it and restart the whole process.Run diskscan in the "Check folders and files mode" only.If your HD seems to be working OK,don't bother with full scandisc. However, run defrag when you've added/deleted a bunch of programs, regardless of what Windows recommends.....Dawgtuff.

I think one o fthe best ways to defrag w/o having problems--albeit it can take longer--is to boot up in safe mode. (press F8 at yer bootup and select it from the menu). then run defrag.

I agree with SoopaStar. This eliminates having to go through the task of ctl-alt-del of all running programs that can write to the HD during the scan and cause a re-start, hense the 10 tries to scan.
