Hi, I have a new WIndows XP Pro SP2 computer and I am having problems connecting to a network (Workgroup). I have created a user on the system, changed the workgroup name and can only login as Administrator. If I try and login as the user I get the message "The system could not log you on. Make sure your username and domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case". I can ping the other computers on the network. A windows 98 SE computer can login fine using the same login name and password.

Right click on my computer, then click properties from that menu. Go to the Computer Name tab and click change. What is your full computer name. It should be a single name. momslaptop or whatever. If it has a fully qualified domain name, momslaptop.home.com or something to that affect you've joined a windows 2000 or 2003 AD domain. Check the workgroup radio button in the "Member of" section and name your workgroup, hit ok a couple of times and reboot. The problem you may run into is you might need a domain admin login to remove it from the domain. It should still allow you to change it to a workgroup so you might want to talk to the admin of whatever domain you joined and have him/her delete the computer account in AD.
An easy way to check on this is logoff if your logged on, then logon. If your joined to a domain there will be a drop down box with "Log onto" or whatever. In that drop down box you'll see your local computer and at least one domain name.
