I just got in the mail my new Maxtor SATA 300GB 16mb cache Diamondmax drive (part # 6B300S0) and I can't seem to set it up... power cable and interface cable no problem... I have an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe mobo and the jumper settings are cool as well as in the bios. I run WinXP (SP2) off my WD IDE HD 120 gig for now. I have a self boot disc of the latest WinXP that I'd like to put on a 10 gig partition of the SATA drive then wipe my WD 120 after backing up my files to the new SATA drive. SO:
SATA will be 10 gig part for WINXP (290 gigs for storage)
WD IDE HD 120 GIGs of free storage space
My current config will not recognize the RAID/SATA hard drive so I can not format it and then partition it and put XP on it, etc.
Please help!!!! Thanks! -Z

if you're trying to install winxp on the sata drive, then you need to use the f6 option during setup and load the sata drivers.

I bought an OEM version w/o driver disc(s) ...with my self boot WinXP (SP2) disc, can I do the F6 trick with no additional software? I ask because as of now my current windows XP setup is not recognizing it. Thanks! -Z

you need to get the sata drivers from asus. they should have also come with the motherboard cd.

UPDATE:
I have the ASUS drivers now installed and used Partition Magic 8 to format the new sata drive... in My Computer it now recognizes the drive (with two partitions...intended for an OS and mass storage). However, the problem exists still in trying to install XP on the new drive.
I tried installations from:
1. booting the XP SP2 install CDr
2. running "install Xp" right from Windows.
Though my new drive is recognized in my current WINXP config, in BOTH install options, it is NOT recognized. I tried the "F6" option during setup to install a third party driver but it searches for a floppy drive I don't have. I'm making some headway but can't figure out the next step. Thanks!!! -Z

sorry charlie. you're just gonna have to find a floppy at least temporarily to use the f6 option. there's no getting around that.

i have 2 of those babies, they are quiet and fast, and HUGE!!!!
but they are SATA )-|
and that's a bummer, when i installed XP i also had to make sure my SATA drivers was ready to be loaded in Floppy disk A: 3.5" drive
Make sure you have Unzipped the drivers for the SATA into the 3.5" disk
also those drivers are already in your CD that came with the Asus mobo (i got that as well)
is very easy, just hit F6 as soon as you see the message during the CD boot up of XP install and it will ask you for the Disk A:
inselt your 3.5" disk with the drivers, and off you go
Make sure you get BOTH !!!!! SATA!!! DRIVERS into that DISK!!!
the ASUS mobo comes with 2 SATA controller
one from Via, one from Promise, and you will need the drivers from BOTH!!!

Indeed
i was forced to wire a 3.5" disk to my rig
i removed my 3.5' as soon as the install worked :D
now running without 3.5" :p

Hmmm, I suppose I could try and borrow a floppy drive from a neighbor later... however I'd like to believe with modern technology phasing out floppy drives there must be a way to bypass it. A tech friend
just suggested the possibility of editing a file (kernal debugger maybe?) to include CD-Rom support in the list of options to install the drivers. Anyone?
P.s. Yay! Finally got an avatar!! :t

I don't think it's worth the effort. just beg or borrow (don't steal) a floppy drive for the first install. even if you gotta buy a drive it's like $10 or something.

Like you i was thinking about the same thing when i setup my rig :p
like how ironic isn't it?
the new BIOS can boot from USB keychains, or Devices, also FireWire devices
BUT STUPID WINDOWS INSTALL can not read ANYTHING ELSE other than a 3.5" :x
I did try to give the 100% EXACT path of those drivers i have in my CD ROM disk from asus
and still it did not pick it up
i even connected another IDE HDD with the drivers, it YET STILL!! did not pick it up
Only way it picked it up was with the **** 3.5" drive
insane....
Microsoft is too out of style with technology :D

Yes!! I hope Windows XP Service Pack 3 includes frickin SATA drivers built in and sharks with frickin laser beams!!! No more Sea bass! :0
I got my drive up and running now... it is not recognized in my bios but it is in startup and in windows... any ideas? I do have ver 1008-D bios too.
Also, now I have to set my primary drive in bios to NONE.. if I put AUTO it will detect my WD 120 caviar and it will not boot windows at all... what to do?

it can be used as a slave without the f6 option, but you must have a floppy for the sata driver install. there is no other way.
