I have some files on my win95 pc that i cannot delete. The files are from a program I do not use anymore. When trying to delete them a message comes up saying ACCESS Denied. The files are *.exe and *.dll types. Does anyone have any ideas how i can remove them?

GOOD MORNING,

Any perticular reason that you need to get rid of these files?

If you need the room then I would suggest Norton CleanSweep which comes with SystemWorks which I just saw for sale for $49 with $20 rebate and includes Norton Anti- Virous 5.0

Be careful deleting Dll's

I assume you have used either/both Add/Remove from the Control Panel, or the Uninstall utility from the program itself.

A permanent way to remove stubborn files is by going into the Registry (StartMenu/Run/regedit) and doing a Ctrl+F for the program name. Delete that entry, and continue with F3 for any further entries.

Do backup your Registry first - and like Bronco said, be careful with the .dll's.

why dont you delete them through Dos?

absolutely, delete through dos, OR if you don't like to fool with dos, then try to rename the files, then delete them. Some time ago when I was waging war on several viruses, that was the only way I could get rid of the files. You mat also have to right clik on the file, go to properties, and make sure the "read-only" attribute box is UNchecked. Then rename the file, and boot it's pointed little head off of your hd.

By the way, they may be in use... do the ctrl/alt/del and end task for everything except explorer and sys tray. Now, they can't be in use. Windows doesn't like you fooling with files that it is in the process of using. It's kinda like pulling the rug out from under Billy G.!

Good Luck y'all....

you could boot into safe mode or DOS mode by pressing the F8 key before the computer boots. (it will bring up a menu) then you can delete those files.
I concur with above statements tho. You dont want to delete files. if you do this often, and not unisntalling programs you are going to have problems down the road. Even can cause a PC not to boot.
