sound card plays cd's but no other sound

have a Fortemedia FM801 (Diamond Tech.DT0398)PCI sound card. Problem I am having is I can play audio CD-roms without a problem but windows will not play any other sounds Midi/wav etc. Says device is in use.
checked anything and everything..checks out ok.Installed the latest drivers for the card.
no errors on any devices under system /device manager. checked multimedia devices and it's listed etc. PULLED CARD OUT AND TRIED TO REINSTALL. According to windows it's there but all I get is popping on start up and shut down and faint buzzing. checked all volume settings there up. just no sound. No errors anywhere either.
changed speakers still same result. ????
any other options? HELP ME!!!!!!

when you uninstalled it from the computer, did you go into add/remove hardwware and delete it completely from your computer, turn it off, take the card out, boot up, shut down , install card, then reboot? sometimes this can clear all the windows **** that gets confused. If this doesn't work, i would email the card man. , maybe you have a bad card....???

did all the above..card still doesn't work. Stupid piece of ..well you know.
Had another ISA card laying around , stuck it in and windows found it loaded the software and it worked within a few minutes...PCI card is history....Thanks anyways guys!!!!!!!!!!!

I have found that the biggest problem with sound cards is the IRQ's and DMA's the card wants to use but is in use by another device causing an in-use error message.

Check your midi settings for your sound card very carefully along with the settings for all the other cards and you may find that a setting is shared. Sound cards even on-board can't share with other devices and still have it work.

Conflicts won't show-up but if there is one the card will work 50/50 due to that conflict.
