I went to a comp show the other day, and I saw some ISA modems, but werent sure if they could be Winmodems...of them were a Diamond supraexpress that I have. I alwasy thoung ISA meant NOT A WINMODEM, but on the back of the diamond box, it said requires winndows 3.1 or later...uhh...so ISA can be winmodem?

Yes, an ISA modem can be a Winmodem - I had one (hey, it was $14) and I'm sure that Socalgal can tell you about her previous experience with an ISA Winmodem.

I have an ISA modem and run it with 95, no problems. I had more troble putting a PCI modem in my computer than I ever had with the ISA one.

Yes, the winmodems are very cheap and inefficient. They are not really modems but an interface between your computer and the processor. In reality, the processor does all the digital and analog functions. Since they rely on windows environments, I won't recommend for dos, unix, linux or even windows nt users. They really slow down the system. I had found that they will work well for a while and then stop working without any reason.

I think the best bet to avoid winmodems is to get an external modem. Nowadays they are cheap and they will guarantee a better connection and they are really "hardware" modems.

That is NOT a Winmodem....the minimum requirements is a 386 processor... winmodems require at LEAST a pentium.

That is NOT a Winmodem....the minimum requirements is a 386 processor... winmodems always require at LEAST a pentium. If it says 386 minimum, it can't be a winmodem...that's the quickest easiest method.

WOW,....Sorry...don't know what happened there!!..?? Anyhow, the quickest way to tell, is the minimum requirements, if it's a 386 processor, it's NOT a winmodem...if it's like a pentium 166, it is a winmodem

Magk9 - that is okay, he needed that much reassurance
AuraEdge***- it has the minimum requirements of Win3.1 or later to support the "shotgun" software. I do not think you will find a single "Winmodem" that can operate on Win3.1 - all the one's I've seen require Win95 or higher and at least a 100mhz Pentium. On a system with a fast processor and plenty of RAM a winmodem is not really that bad, in fact the connections can be quite good - but I will stick by the 16550 UART based modems until I switch to cable or DSL.
By the way, I have that modem (the ISA version w/2MB buffer)and I am using it now - there is a PCI version by the same name that is a winmodem. I bought mine some time ago and it had kind of slow connection speeds - taking the suggestion of some kind folks here at Sysopt I flashed it with the latest firmware and it now works much better.

Yes, I have an ISA "winmodem" a Best Data 56K internal data fax modem, ITU-T V.90 and all that. I thought when I bought it (for ol' Lola) that since it was ISA, it was a "hard" or "real" modem. But actually it's not bad at all, and get good connectivity and thruput with it, so I kept it.
As I understand it, a winmodem will not run on DOS, hence "win" for Windows.
I also think a winmodem will run on a 486 machine but not a 386... correct me if I'm wrong there.

This is so cool! And as with most of out overclocking and flashing schemes, IT WAS COMPLETELY FREE!
Alright...now to check my ping levels /forum/smile.gif.. Maybe I can waste those LPB's now...hmm /forum/wink.gif
