A friend has asked me to help.. His computer resets the date to 1997 each time it is turned on. This would be the approximate date of his bios; the machine is about 2 years old.

I have no experience in this area. Can a battery be replaced? Is this what the problem is?

Sounds like a battery.They only last about 2 years.Most MB's have replaceable batteries.
