I just received the following message from one of my classmates.

"My old computer is acting up
on me. It freezes up sometimes and other times all kinds of dialog boxes and drop down menus appear just by moving the mouse over the desktop.
Donna Berscht, our PC Repair teacher, says it sounds like a software
conflict and is probably the Win 98 Second Edition I installed just
about the time the computer started acting up. My question is: How do I
remove the Second Edition portion of Windows 98 without removing the
entire Operating System? Will simply reinstalling the original version
of Windows 98 do what I want it to do?"

The only thing I could tell him was that I haven't installed Second Edition of Win98 on any PCs so I have no experience with it yet. I would think once you upgraded it's there to stay unless they have an uninstall second edition choice somewhere either on the add/remove programs section or in the Win98 directory. You may have to remove everything off the PC and reinstall the original operating system. Check the documentation to see if it says anything about removing it if the upgrade goes bad. Sometimes it will give you suggestions. I'll ask some computer gurus tomorrow to see what they think. I don't think reinstalling the original Win98 version will fix the problem. It might make it worse.

Please help me with this.

It's listed under add remove programs.
"Windows 98 service pack 1"

But i wouldn't be thinking that this his problem. I'd be lookiing a little further.

I experience the same problem when installing Service Pack 1 on my Win98 machine. My system was perfectly stable before i installed it but once i installed it, it would freeze constantly. I always use the most up to date drivers and software patches but SP1 did a number on my stability. Once i uninstalled it, however, everything returned to normal.
I really do recommend uninstalling it if possible

Thanks for the replies.
I did suggest he check the video card since I've seen those do crazy things. I saw one that wasn't properly seated cause the display to turn lime green periodically.

Don't forget that when upgrading an OS, you're only asking for trouble by running their upgrade program. The best way to upgrade is to start over from scratch and install Win98 SE from the ground up, not over top.

Boy am I glad I go here. I was thinking about going to 2nd addition, now I won't.
Bofore you do anything save those files that are critical on whatever backup you use. Like most people I don't entirely trust Microsoft. My view is wait and watch.
Suggest you reformat the hd and install win98.
