I recently upgraded my system from a 486dx 133 to a PC100 w/ AMD K6 2/350 CPU, WIN98 o/s. After I installed the new board and processor, I tried to start my parallel port scanner and the system froze. I have tried a clean installation, installing from safe mode, formating my hard disk and reinstalling the operating system and all software, contacting the scanner manufacterer who gave me the install from safe mode tip, all to no avail. I have no problems with any other programs, just the scanner. When I try to install the scanner software, at the last part of the installation where it says it is updating data files or something, the system freezes up. Even ctrl-alt-del will not work. I have tried the warm boot and the system freezes up again as soon as the desktop appears. I have to warm boot, go into safe mode and delete the scanner program files. Are there any solutions available to remedy these problems? Thank you.

I suspect a glich in the Bios. Have you got your BIOS set to EPP on LPT1. This is the setting most parallel port scanners use, when using it as a passthrough to the printer. (Does the printer work?)
