I just bought myself a Linksys WRT54G Version 2.2 Wireless, router (I'm only using the wired portion of it for now) mainly for when I get my PSP, but anyways... I was just curious if anyone has tried the 3rd party Firmware out there, like the ones that enable speed boost an such, and what is your opinion and does speed boost really make much difference? :t

There is No firmware that would boost the Speed.
There is third party firmware that would make the Router WDS, add few other security capacities, and will enable you to boost the Output power.
Boosting the output power does not boost the speed but might boost the range (and fry the unit in the process).
If you need any of the additional capacities you can try (keep in mind that you probably void the warranty.
What is WDS?

A speed increase is not likely to help you much with only two computers on the network. If you go wireless, it might help when you get out to any distance or are behind some obstacles. Interference causes a drop in bandwidth.
However, if you are talking about internet speed over wireless, you canīt get more than whatever your internet connection is giving you, so g speeds arenīt much better than b speeds in the home computer world, unless you just xferring files locally. Iīm getting 5 Mbps over my roadrunner connection and having a 54 Mbps router doesnīt do anything for me over what Iīd be getting with an 11 Mbps router. Might help you in a hotspot, though.

As a matter of interest, what's the maximum distance over which this can be used?
