Just thought I'd post this as many see Firefox as a cure all.

I've noticed some popups that have started to get by the firefox built-in popup blocker, but i'm still happier using firefox than IE with regard to security. Of course, no program will ever be perfect.

Did you set up Firefox properly?

make sure you only accept for the SAME website

also this is a AWESOME plug in

https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&version=1.0&os=Windows&id=10

everyone using Mozilla / Firefox / Netscape MUST INSTALL it :D

Or try Opera.....it's really pretty good...matter of preference.

Yes, i've set up Firefox properly, and yes, i've installed adblock months ago.

I've only noticed one or two popups that have gotten past Firefox, but as the article mentions, its bound to happen, and will happen in the near future as Firefox continues to gain popularity.

The only time, i've seen it happen in my machine was due a "java" exploit

basically it was a typical message asking you for yes or no no load Java thingy

i said YES, and that SPAM came in, so i quickly removed it, and try the same website again, this tiem i said NO, and it did not pass.

basically just watch out what you say yes/no to.

By The way is not a choice of the website, but of FireFox

I configured FireFox to ask me for Permission for EVERYTHING

that's why nothing get pass by undetected.

obviously most people will consider that annoying, and lazy to do that

and that is why 99.99999999% of the internet population is INFESTED with SPAM/SPY wares

I don't think it is safer but has features that can allow it to be safer than explorer is lacking. Also I don't think hackers have really tried to exploit firefox as of yet because of it's still relatively small market share.

I think the best bet to being safe is just being smart about what you do. I used explorer since 1996 and never was infected with a virus ever. I use opera, firefox, NS, etc as well. As long as you have a ring of defense firewall > antivirus > popup blocking > permissions > common sense anyone should be fine. A lot of times the later is lacking.

I, like BadBadNeil, have been using IE for a long time (personally since it's inception in 1995) and I have never had a virus from it. It's all about smart browsing (not going to any naughty sites, downloading suspicious files, etc.). But everybody has their own cup of tea. :t

You can vastly improve your safety factor with any browser by running through one of the free web proxy progs like Proxomitron or Privoxy...they're both quite effective.

I concur, it's what I do.
