The vision of the future so vibrantly portrayed in Star Trek bears a striking similarity to the future The Planetary Society is working so hard to build.
Such a confluence of universes is unique in the worlds of entertainment and nonprofit organizations. And it is a relationship that has endured for twenty-five years, since the Society’s founding in 1980.
In that quarter-century, The Planetary Society has enjoyed the support of many denizens of the Star Trek universe, starting with Gene Roddenberry and Majel Barrett Roddenberry, and continuing with their son, Rod. Nichelle Nichols is always there when we need a hand, and Robert Picardo and John Rhys-Davies now serve on our Advisory Council. Many, many Str Trek people have given us their unstinting support over the years, and we are grateful to them all.
The recent cancellation of Enterprise, the latest incarnation of this entertainment institution, has caused us to reflect on our symbiotic relationship—and wonder about a future without a Star Trek paving the way.
