Try reseating the card or try a different slot.

We're trying to put a nic card in an old 486 to get it hooked up to our network for school and we keep getting this error "error 166, mismatch in slot1". What could be causing this problem?

Its a 3com etherlink III 3c529tp and its an mca card, the color of the slot we are trying to put it in is brown. The computer is pretty old so we're not exactly sure what kind of slots are on the board.

You need the config file for the the card and config utility for for the machine. MCA machines need to be told in effect, what cards are in them. 3com's website might still have the config files for it, and IBM may have the config utility for the machine still. Just search IBM's website for the model name/number or start digging through archives or obsolete computer info. If you can post the machine name/model somebody here might be able to help find the right info.

Ugh. NCR did make some MCA machines. Not many companies other than IBM did.

Check out www.ncr.com (http://www.ncr.com) Look around under the 'support link' section. You are looking for a reference disk and I think this link should be where to look:[url]http://www3.ncr.com/support/pc/pcdesc/Machines.shtml[url]

Off that same page is a link called: Adapter Description Files (The *.ADF files used on Micro Channel Machines) which probably has the adf file for the 3com card you are using too. If you get really stuck, call or email NCR and ask for help. They should be able to point you at the right files.
