I have upgraded a drive for a family member that was running Win98 1st. to Win2K Pro.

This drive and Win98 had a virus Worm.Bagle ??? and I cleaned it using Stinger and one other cleaner..then I D/L AVG free and put it on the drive.

Then, I upgraded after I was reasonably sure the virus was gone.

uninstalled a few old games etc. that will not run under 2K, and tried to go online..all seemed ok, but up poped a window that said SVCHOST.EXE has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. Need to restart program. a log was also made i believe, but I cannot find it...it did not give a name of the log.

This may be caused by some other game or application that is not 2K ready.

AVG had problems and indicated it was corrupted after the upgrade, so tonight I D/L the most recent version of AVG then uninstalled the old one, reinstalled the new copy and ran it on the entire drive... it gave me a clean bill...but, while running AVG (and still online) SVCHOST.EXE crashed again. Both times this has happened, I was online. I could not close the internet connection...I had to reboot to get the OS operational again.

Any thoughts would be appreciated as I am about ready to send the machine to my family in Florida..

Tnx

Instead of upgrading, you should really just reinstall from scratch, Bov. It could take days to fix this when it will only take hours to reinstall.

Viruses can only be eradicated 100% by formatting.

Yeah I know Bill...and I do believe thats what I will do. I have come back here twice since I made the post/thread (which SVCHOST crashed on me again as I submitted my post to begin this thread)..rebooted and started back, and didn't quite make it.

I have since uninstalled a few things. The last time it crashed I only had IE open and online...so, maybe the problem is a bad upgrade with IE.

I was trying to keep this old drive as "original" as possible since two of the grandkids had 'stuff' on it..but I ain't gonna send it back doing this kinda ****...just thought maybe somebody might have a clue, and I could learn something.

I have two other drives setup with 2K...one is a ghost of the main drive..so..she may never even need a 3rd backup drive, and this one is small.

I may just copy all of the general stuff to a few CD's and hit the format button.

But, in the meantime...I am still interested in why..if anybody wants to throw his/her hat in the ring..

Thanks again, BpB...

The problem is probably Not svchost per-se but some application that is trying to use svchost and it is missing a Hook that was deleted by the Virus cleaning.

Look at this page toward the end may be it can help: Link to: Basic Steps in cleaning Internet "Junk". (http://www.ezlan.net/clean.html)

I completely agree with BP, on the clean install.
Bov...as another choice, have you tought of slaving that drive on another system, with up to date AV and scan it with that PC?

svchost.exe is a system process...which can be tricky to say the least.

With XP Pro, you can launch from a DOS shell:

tasklist /svc

And see what is hiding behind that. No such luck with W2K.

Good luck...Bov!

Thanks guys... I have decided to just keep this drive here..in its present condition, format one of my several small drives that I will not use again other than storage, slap an OS on it and her ISP etc. and send that along for a possible backup when all else fails.

Then, with her original drive here..and she really needs something off of it that she has forgotten (you know, that very old recipe that came down thru the family from her 3rd great grandma on her fathers side)LOL... I'll have it.

Last night, I was here..then went to eBay..by the time I signed in at eBay, the drive had just about stopped...clicking on the sign in button after entering my user name and P/W...going to My Ebay..took 3 minutes..then the page took about 1.5 minutes to fill in. I clicked on the disconnect icon in the tray..and it would not come up...for maybe 3 or 4 minutes...it was like time stood still...every thing was in slow motion. I just clicked on something and waited...it took a good 10 minutes to shut down...I never did get the SVCHOST error that time, but I'm sure it was the same thing.

I would like to know what is happening, but I know that svchost.exe handles applications...at least that is what I read (I think) and the technology for that is probably way over my head.

Thanks for the link cat5e... I'll certainly read it...always learning!

Download Microsoft AntiSpy install and Run it.

After cleaning pull down the Tools Menu and choose Advance Tools.

In Advance Tools choose System Explorers and click on Running Process.

Look carefully through the Entries you might find the Rouge event that causes the Trouble.

P.S. I totally understand your problem. I have on my computer countless amounts of games that my Grandson is using when he comes to visit. Reformatting the Drive will erase all the points that he works so hard to accumulate in various games. :t

So reformatting for me is a Dooms Day solution.
