Hi there,
My problem is that I can't use mine and my friend's external modem with my comp's com 2 port, where else my modem works fine on my friend's or if I plug it into the mouse's serial port.
I'm guessing there's something wrong with my com port 2(although windows->control panel->system says it's working fine) or my mother board it self.
My cpu's a amkd 266 (mother unknown, but I was told it could be upgradable to amk6 2 300). I saw Ali chips on the mother board tho.

I went to a comp vendor to get a new com port, and was told that I need to find out whether the mother board is american or european version, to get the right port. Please tell me how could I find out? Or if there's another alternative? Or if how I could whether it's my motherboard's fault

Please help me. I thank you in advance.

regards,
soaps

Sounds as if the external needs Com1/3 resources and would conflict with your mouse if you put it there. Is the modem itself switchable? I'm doubting there is anything wrong with the port itself, buy you never know. If your serial mouse is com2 capable, put it on that port. Then try the modem again.

First, make sure COM 2 is enabled in the BIOS, and actually use the proper settings for COM 2 (IRQ 3, address 2F8) rather than "auto" (That's caused me a lot of headaches for me in the past). Next, make sure nothing else is using IRQ 3, including COM 4 which usually shares that IRQ. That's about the best I can offer... Good luck.
