This problem has happened on my own and my brothers computers which were bought from the same shop at the same time.
During the last week or so our computers haven't been able to start up properly. Sometimes the monitor will not even start and the hard drive doesn't do anything (yes the computer was switched on at all the appropriate places), other times it will freeze during before or immediately after the bios memory test. If it manages to get into windows 98 it will freeze within 5 minutes prompting a restart which will result in the above problems or a freeze during scandisk. Here are the specs:

Celeron 400 (no overclocking)
Abit BH6
2 * 64 MB PC 100 RAM
Leadtek 16MB TNT2
12MB Voodoo2
(I actually hve 2 in SLI,different brand)
Sound Blaster Live Value sound card
40 speed CDROM
6.4 GB HDD
1.44 MB FDD
I also have a 10/100Mbps NIC

This problem is strange because we have done different things to our systems, I have even recently reformatted and re installed everything with the most up to date drivers (mobo BIOS excluded) but my brother hasn't.

Any help would be apppreciated.

THANKS

are you sure its not overclocked.

A friend of mine bought a PC from a Computer store that built it for him. The guy told him the chip was a 200 Mhz but when it started to do what your problem is. We took it out and it turned out to be a 166 clocked at 200 the chip burned itself out. It would only do a successful boot at 90 Mhz so we replaced it and everything worked better than before.

Try removing your NIC card and/or Sound Blaster Card in Device Manager. If it works fine, it's probably a hardware conflict. This is just a guess though. I had a lot of the same problems when I first built my computer.

iT COULD BE A DEFECTIVE POWER SUPPLY.

I have also noticed that there isn't the usual single beep in the bios when starting.

Also I have noted that some devices share IRQs. Is it necessary to give them all seperate IRQs or does Win 98 cope with this. How many IRQs are possible?

Any more suggestions.

I have now experienced a couple of spontaneous shutdowns after about 10 minutes of use.
Would an IRQ conflict be revealed at start up or later?

remove the two voodoo cards in the system.. and see if it is stable.. then put one in at a time.. but if they are voodoo cards from diff manufacturers.. do not sli them.. plus your system is prob locking up because of either mb voltage or/and overheating.
