I dont't get as good speeds with my cable modem as my friend who lives down the street. He gets great speeds from the netscape ftp while I dont get as good. I get about 80 k /s tops while he claims he can download a 17 meg file from it in under a minute. My cable modem is setup correctly and I have a much better comp then him. What could be wrong and what should i do? I have a motorola cable modem and an smc ether ez ethernet card. If you can help please reply.

Well, working in the telecommunications field, and using ADSL at home, all I can say is his line quality is probably better than yours. I've seen it happen where two houses side by side, with same isp, have two different connection speeds. His cable line is probably newer than yours, or he could be closer to the switch than you, so his gets first dibs on connection. Try downloading an internet tweek utility. Some of those seem to work pretty well. Also check for updated drivers for your NIC card and modem if applicable. That's about all I can think of.

Go here for excellent registry tweaks for cable modem users. Most people notice a HUGE difference!

If your interested I have a sheet of tweak suggestions that says it can get you up too 30-40%. I have posted it over at cpu-central.com I have never tried it myself as my supplier advised me that the settings would just revert back to default settings. I put it up for a guy by the name of Encryptor about two mabey three weeks ago. You should find it posted there. It came from the Singapor 1 site. If you can't find it, drop me an email and I'll send it to you. It should still be up unless they have cleared the board since I posted it.

I would start with the supplier first and see if they have any suggestions. I had a signal booster put on my cable line going to the modem. They should be able to run your "ping" rate test and your packet rate or "loss" test also.

I asked Encryptor to let me know if it worked but no response as of this date. One other consideration is how many people you have on your "node", this will always effect your speed. What program are you using to get modem speeds with?
