one thing to check is to open up your win.ini file with notepad, and go to the [desktop] section and see what is listed under WALLPAPER=
type in the path for the picture you want to use as your desktop, i.e. c:\windows\cloud.bmp

so windows can find it on startup

Since you mentioned that you don't know a thing about win95 could it be that after you pick the wallpaper you hit the ok button instead of the apply button.
Do you have Active Desktop turned on? If so, the BMP wallpaper is getting "buried" under the Active Desktop, which uses JPGs as wallpaper.
Right click anywhere on the desktop where there isn't an icon or taskbar, Active Desktop, make sure View As Web Page is NOT checked. As soon as you un-check it, you should see your disappearing wallpaper.

Hello IRED,
You have probably figured it out by now but here is my comment: after you have made sure about he active desktop thing mentioned in the previous post;
If you open a .bmp file using Windows paint there is a "save as walpaper" option in the file menu. Keep in mind, as jbyron indicated, the file must be where Windows can find it, if you move it your loose it - temporarily.

Just copy the .bmp into the Windows file.
Then select it from the display properties and apply. It should stay there.
Thanks Folks,
I'm stopping over today,at least now I have somewhere to start.
I'll get back to y'all.
