Dlink 604 setup problems

Hi I have recently tried to setup my dlink 604E router and have come across several problems.

The first problem is I can't seem to release / renew my ip when typing ipconfig /release in dos in winXP.

The second problem is it comes back with an auto ip starting with 169.xxx and when I try to renew my ip it comes back with a DHCP error.

Anyone know how to solve this problem? I can't seem to setup my router settings without getting past this stage.

a 169.254.x.x means that you probably got a bad physical connection.

are you sure your network cable is good? did you try a different port? are you sure you have a patch cable and not a crossover cable?

I would try doing a factory reset then configure the router again.

On my Di-524 you press and hold in the reset button for 10 seconds then reboot it.

Try setting the address to manual 192.168.1.1 or whatever it says in the manual

Then try and ping the router

As MK says have you checked the simplest issue first "the cable"
