looking at device manager in xp, i noticed that my graphics card (radeon x850) is listed under display adaptors, followed by another entry : radeon x850 series - secondary
is this normal? both have the same details for drivers and resources. should i remove one?

It's normal for ATi's that support dual monitors. ;)

yes all ATI Radeon 8000 series and above automatically supports 2 monitors, regardless if the physical connection is there or not.
you can dissable the 2nd card to save system resources if you don't use it

Actually, _all_ Radeons except the original Radeon (aka 7200) do support dual monitors in this way - including the Radeon VE aka 7000 and the 7500.

My PCI All-In-Wonder VE (7500 chip) doesn't, oddly enough.

That's because you can strap the Radeon chip to hide its 2nd instance when you're designing a single-headed card. I'm sure ATi did know that trick when they made that AIW :)

Yeah, it's just that I've seen some Radeon cards show two instances of itself in Device Manager, despite only having one monitor port. I'm sure these weren't BBAs though.

read what i said and what Peter said
all 7000 series are only 1
all 8000 series and newer are 2

What Peter said contradicts what you said, so that doesn't do me any good.

No they aren't. I wish you'd check your facts ... 7000 and 7500 are dual head capable - the 7200 is the ONLY Radeon chip that isn't.

If these are implementing the TV-out as an independent head, then it's perfectly fine like that.

No, these weren't AIW or otherwise TV-capable cards. In fact, the one VGA port was the only port on the card at all. I wish I could remember what kind of card and what Radeon chip it was. I think it was a Celestica Radeon 7000, but I can't remember for sure.
