I am using a "Smart" and Friendly CDR 4012 SCSI CD writer. Ever since i installed Adaptec EZ CD Creator, whenever i try to make a CD, as soon as the drive starts writing to the CD i get a blue screen that says:

"A fatal exception OE occured at 0028:C00071A7 in VXD VMM(01) + 000061A7"

What does this mean?
How can i fix this?
Neither "stupid And Not So Friendly" nor Adaptec have been of any use.

PLEASE HELP!!!

The best I can do is to offer some possible avenues to explore. Hopefully someone here encountered the exact problem and will see this post and offer the fix…

-In no particular order-

*I came across one VxD error. Can’t remember what it was other than it being an Fatal Exception. The method I used to correct the problem was to replace the VxD file using Win98’s System File Checker. I picked out an VxD and choose to replace it from the original W98 CD. In the process of replacing the file, File Checker will replace all the original VxDs. This solved the problem. If your using W98SE, insert that CD in instead.

*Reinstalling the Easy CD Creator is also a viable option to explore. Download and install the most recent upgrade from Adaptec (vers. 3.5c), if you haven’t got it yet.

*Check that you have the most recent firmware for the CD-R. Download and flash it if need be.

*Microsoft’s K-Base mentions an Fatal Error happening with a different CD-R software. In that case, the offending Vdx is renamed and the system rebooted. But you have to know what the name of the VdX is.
(You can possibly make a list of all the VxD files; remove the Adaptec software; do a find on Vxd; compare it with the first list…)

*The following is from Adaptec’s site:

Description

Why am I receiving a General Protection Fault/Invalid Page Faults/Fatal Exception Errors in Windows 95/98?

You can try the following items:

1. End Task on all programs running in the background except Explorer and Systray by pressing ctrl+alt+del. Highlight the item and click End Task. Repeat until only Explorer and Systray are left.

2. Make sure no real mode driver is loading from CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT ( Rename the files to *.TST)

3. Run Scandisk then Disk Defragmenter (To run: click on 'Start', 'Programs', 'Accessories', and 'System Tools'.)

4. Clean the windows temporary directory, your browsers cache folder, and the recycle bin. (Either move or remove all files and folder under \Windows\Temp directory).

Try removing the software and reinstalling, and then upgrading it first.

I hope this gives you some ideas…
